How do I format a blank DVD in XP?

My dad bought a Panasonic DVD recorder a few months ago so we could transfer all the old family VHS tapes to DVDs. Yesterday I hooked the VCR (out) to the DVD recorder (in), and then connected the recorder to a TV input (tell me if I hooked it up wrong). I put in a blank DVD+R but the recorder gave me an "UNFORMATTED" message. Damn, I knew it seemed too easy. The POS recorder can't format blank DVDs (my friend has an even bigger POS dvd recorder, and even that formats blank DVDs!).

I put the DVD in my HP Pavilion zv6130 laptop and tried to format it, first by right clicking on the drive, then trying the Sonic CD/DVD burning software that came with the comp. I couldn't find a formatting option anywhere. Today I downloaded a Nero demo off downloads.com, which looks liek areally good program, but I still couldn't find a "Format blank DVD" option.

Maybe I'm looking for the wrong option. Maybe I'm not even on the right path to getting the DVD to work in the recorder. All I know is I've hit a dead end and I need AOs help.

Summary: How do I format a DVD+R on Windows XP so I can use it in a DVD recorder to burn VHS tapes?

im guessing your DVD player doesnt play DVD+R and needs DVD-R disks. I know some only write one or the other. All DVD Burners should format the Disk automatically when you put a new blank one in it.

Hmmm..the recorder did come with a DVD-RAM disk, maybe I should have tried that before the DVD+Rs I have

I'm pretty sure the manual said it could burn onto just about anything, but I'll check again tomorrow. Maybe it's just a DVD-RAM recorder.

I know there is a difference between DVD+R and DVD-R disks, and some players can only play/record one or the other. I would imagine that any DVD Burner made today should play both, but who knows. Its just a thought. I know I've burned thousands of disks on my DVD burners, and have never needed to "format" a disk in my PC for use in a DVD burner. I've usd 5 different types of DVD burners.
