    Home recording studio.....

    Well, I'm ready to spend some cash.... I've been playing drums for about 8 years and just picked up guitar about a year ago. Now I want to pick up some home recording equipment. I was talking to some people at the local music store and they recommended the Digidesign Mbox 2 pro (he offered it for $650, shelf price of $699). Next in line was the PreSonus Firestudio ($699). The guy said I should go with the Mbox 2 because it comes with Pro Tools software which allows for multi-track editing whereas the edition of Cuebase with the Firestudio doesn't allow that (according to the music store guy).

    So as you can tell, with no experience with this, I am very lost. I have little knowledge of audio equipment from just playing music and setting up for live gigs, but other than that, I know nothing.

    Anybody have experience with either of these units? If not, do you have any recommendation for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

      Mbox will improve your recording quality and protools is the software you want...buy a mac and get protools...ill talk to me brother tomorrow..he has a home studio, but it's for hip-hop, so the main peices are: turn-tables, keyboard, MP 2000,sound board,computer,mbox,Krk speakers...umm ye think thats bout it.


      But yea Mbox is something you will want along with protools.

          id say get a mac and a microphone and youre set with GarageBand. Then again I know nothing of what youre asking.

              just to throw this out here, I take calls on mac's all day long and all I ever hear is about protools and digidesign.

              With that said, I am not a musician or have ever used any recording software other than my garageband training.

                  My buddy was talking to me the other day. He got that MBox thing and Protools for X-Mas. I'll try and get in touch with him and see if he can post something to help you guys out.

                      I'm most likely not going to get a mac. I'll probably be dropping about 1500 on a nice laptop in the next 5 months, so I'll be all set in the computer area.

                          That means there's gonna be the noise of the laptop grinding in the background if you don't isolate yourselves. You going to do any noise dampening? I've heard the difference and it helps a lot during recordings IMO.

                          edit: just as muz said... hard drive speed is also another factor why laptops aren't as good for the job. The noise really is annoying if you're recording just vocals though.

                              Although I have been out of the recording side of music for quite a few years. I have used and owned a few different Digidesign systems and they have always been top notch. I own an old Sessions8 system which in it's day (mid 90's) kicked serious butt.

                              Unless you really want this system to be very portable, I would avoid laptops as the control device for any system. Get a real comptuer, it will serve you much better. The hard drive speed would be the #1 reason, but I could go on for some time on the pros of using a desktop system vs a laptop.

                              If you want protability, get a rack mounted unit and toss it in a road case. Might cost more, but you'll be much happier.
