    quick question about mail

I keep getting mail that is addressed to my house, but it's nobody who lives here. Is there something I'm supposed to write on the letter and put back in the mail or something? I don't know if there is some sort of protocol for this.

LEGALLY you can only open birthday cards, other than that the rest of it you just throw away.
(don't really know what your supposed to do) maybe take it up to the post office and tell them whoever it is doesn't live there?

Check your credit files with all three major credit reporting agencies, and report it to the post office ASAP. I would not be at all surprised if you are getting junk mail from an identity theft. Unless there is another reason that persons name would appear at that address

This came up on a local talk radio show a few weeks ago. According to a postmaster that called , legally if it's not yours, it needs to go back to the post office, it doesn't matter what it is. Write 'Not At This Address' on the envelope, put it in your box, and put the flag up.

Here's one reason. A change of address only lasts for 12 months. We've been in our house for just over a year and have just now seen mail addressed to the previous residents go up substantially.

Thats a valid reason. I did not say there were not reasons out there, I said if there is not a reason there may be an issue.

Take Lohmans advice. Other than that you can't open anything from the US mail that isn't addressed to you or you don't have the addresses permission to open. UPS, Fed-Ex, DHL, and other private companies are a different story.
