    Glock vs XD

Looking at picking up another pistol; Glock 21 or Springfield XD; both are 45ACP, 5", high-cap 13 rounds, and have night sights. XD is $25 more but comes with extras. I have Glock experience but never shot an XD.

    Let's hear some opinions...

Of the two; I'd vote for the XD. I'm an HK USP fan, personally.
God....I guess I was probably returning videotapes.

The XD has a lifetime warranty, and has had good reviews. Keep in mind that it's a Croatian gun sold by Springfield.

I'm interested in hearing this. I need another gun in my quick access safe, my Kimber does not live there all the time. It needs to be as close to point and shoot as possible, well being as safe as possible, and likely going to go down to 9MM. Its more for my g/f than it is for me - no its not just going to be stuffed there and forgotten, but I can already tell you she will not practice with it as much as I do my Kimber.

I was leaning towards a XD

Lohman, I'm seriously considering the subcompact XD. All indications are that it is a reliable and accurate weapon.

Im probably not going to go too compact, and I like this rail on it. The bit I have read on them has indicated they are nice. Unfortunately right this moment I pulled too much out of the safe for another purchase and don't feel comfortable pulling more out, my g/f wants a select comfort bed, and then I will have to consider another gun. It may be a month or two...

I personaly have the subcompact 3" .40 XD and have shot several diffrent models of the XD and of Glocks, and I don't care for how the Glock feels in my hands...but its all personal choice, your best bet is to find a shop that will let you test them both

BOTH will have a lifetime warranty (seller will provide life time for the Glock). I know it's a Croatian design, I have nothing against Croatians... I think everyone should own one

Appearance wise, the XD is very similar to the Glock design. Aside from the angle of the grip and the backstrap safety, what are the design differences between the two?

I've shot the Glock on the DHS qualification course several times (all fast draw from the holster); comfortable enough.

I think the XD, in spite of it's youngness, has more cool trinkets for it. I love that little rail underneath the barrel, and the springpin internal laser is really neat.
More importantly, I think the XD has more active safety built into it - the loaded chamber indicator, the back grip squeeze safety (like 1911 .45s), and the trigger pressure safety. Only Glocks Ive ever seen only have the trigger pressure safty - IMO a joke of a safety anyways.

If budget is anyone's thing - S&W makes a striker .40 that is a cookie cutter copy of Glock - SW40GVE is the model IIRC. They are very easy on the wallet - if you looking for a new .40 or 9mm.

Personally, If I wanted a .45 ACP or .45 GAP I'd get the XD
                      If I got a Glock it would be a model 20 or 20C (10mm )
                      And if I was looking for a .40 or 9mm I'd pick up the S&W SW40GVE or SW9GVE

All three are striker style weapons and well made by very reputable companies and great ergonomic shooters.

I have the SW in .40. Its kick strikes me a touch on the extreme side - more than either my Sig .357 had or my Kimber .45 has. Not sure if its just my perception...

I shoot a CZ-75 in .40 and it kicks alot IMO also (like the SW .40). Maybe it's just something inherent to the .40 plaform

The Glock also has the integral rail and the LaserMax is also available for it. Glock also has the loaded chamber indicator, trigger safety, and drop-safety (internal, I believe the XD also has it? I SWEAR by the drop safety!). The only safety the Glock obviously lacks is the back strap safety.

I know the trigger safety is not as disabling as some would like but this is the strength of both designs, a pistol that is carried hot and ready to fire instantly while still maintaining a degree of safety. I carried a Glock hot for over a year straight, 12-16 hours a day, every day. Haven't seen an accidental discharge yet.

I'm leaning towards the XD for now, unless I come across some awesome Glock deal. Besides a new CCW piece, this new pistol will also serve as my sidearm for a possible PSS gig we may have (contract is out for bid) coming up (think Air America/armed flight crew making international deliveries). We'd be providing our own kits, so my AK will go as my main also.

                              Quick side question.

I'm too practical (cheap) for my own good, I've been looking at pistols lately, and am curious as to whether I can replace a barrel/firing mechanism with different calibers?

I.E.: I buy a 9mm for fun shooting, can I buy parts to upgrade to a .40 S&W for more practical protection? Would this be a brand specific question?

I know on some rifles this is possible, and in fact the "Contender" is designed around the idea of one gun for all purposes (I think).

I suppose the other question would be is the upgrade going to cost as much as a whole new pistol, is it even worth it?
