I.E.: I buy a 9mm for fun shooting, can I buy parts to upgrade to a .40 S&W for more practical protection? Would this be a brand specific question?

I know on some rifles this is possible, and in fact the "Contender" is designed around the idea of one gun for all purposes (I think).

I suppose the other question would be is the upgrade going to cost as much as a whole new pistol, is it even worth it?
On some weapons, the whole slide is different from 9mm to .40 due to the higher pressures of the .40 round.

And don't get too caught up on the caliber differences. .40 is as fun to shoot as 9mm, and while .40 is more effective than 9mm for personal defense, the right 9mm will ruin anyones day, and will serve well as a personal protection round.

Im going to agree with this. While my preferred round is the .45 I have no worries using a high quality 9MM round, or giving a gun containing such to my g/f - or even a .380 for that matter.

Laser sight, thats a great idea to add to the purpose of this gun It just keeps creepign up in price.

Question was asked and answered already; example of this is that I also have a Beretta 92FS (9mm), $200 and I can have a whole new receiver group in .40 to swap out.

You can ruin someone's day with any round really. I've heard reports even of FN 5.7 (.22) removing the back of someone's head. But those are the most $$$ .22 rounds you'll ever buy.

You can definitely ruin someone's day with any round really. I've heard reports even of FN 5.7 (.22) removing the back of someone's head. But those are the most $$$ .22 rounds you'll ever buy.
You can ruin a person's day with just about any caliber. The Russian assassins used to use .22's because they were the easiest to silence and they had no problem putting that small bullet where it needed to go. That's not practical for personal protection though.

The 9mm, .40s&w, and the .45acp are all great rounds and all are excellent personal protection rounds when using the correct ammo.

** Just a correction for the person above. The FN 57 is a beast, and it doesn't shoot .22 ammo... it's .28... lol. (5.7 x 28), the same thing the FN P90 fires. That round was designed as a better alternative to the .223 round, which is a glorified .22. If you look at the 5.7x28 round, it looks like a small rifle round and it is fun to fire. Great penetration and most of the ammo for it is armor piercing by design. It's a sweet firearm but the ammo is insanely expensive and harder to find and it might not be the most practical firearm for CCW.

Please, for the love of practicality, no discussion of FN 57/P90. I, just, hate that whole ball of wax.

I thought the .22 was an excellent round due to the fact it had enough energy to penetrate a skull, but not enough to exit, so it just bounces around inside.

              Sorry for the repeat question.

The .22 long rifle is, the FN thing uses an odd high velocity round that will pierce body armor, it will get out of a skull too

XD is a great NEW pistol
The amount of features for the price is awsome
I like the multi safety features and overall feel.
Where the thing is made is pointless...if it is shooting and works non stop ...its great.
I had a chance to pick one up with a barsto and a few lovely extras ...but I was a retard and passed.
I guess I am a TRUE mod head...I love ANYTHING I can "race out" markers, guns, cars ...etc.

                  That being said...
                  I CARRY Glocks on Duty.
34(9mm) and 35(.40) ( Some days you feel like a nut , some you dont and all that)
I PREFFER the FULL size of the glocks over the xd
You can make either of these weapons another cal by swapping out the barrel, mags extractor.
I use a barsto in the 35 as it seems to help a bit with over all groups...(I use a tac light on duty as well...this helps GREATLY for my tastes ...muzzle flip is tamed a bit with it on)40 is a great round but it still seems a bit THUMPY in failure drills and such( of course in the Sigs its fin..I guess its an overall weight thing)
The 34...forget it lol. Its easy to shoot.Dead boobs accurate out of the box....and its a 9mm so...cheaper ammo ...17 rnds with a 4 shot extender (custom made leather mag pouches) 9mm MAY not knock you down on shot one BUT...with 21 behind it...I am FAIRLY certain youll stop. ... Then again ... it is all shot placement

Wow this went to rambling mode pretty fast.

I've had an XD .40 for a few years now and havent had a single problem. The added grip safety is nice if you like the extra safety factor. The loaded chamber indicator is helpful and takedown is very easy. Never owned a Glock so i can't say anything for or against them.

Does compensating a gun hurt it's performance any? I've looked into 10mm quite a bit and know it has quite a kick to it.

If I were to go with a compensated model (say a Glock 20C versus a Glock 20) do I give up anything to get the compensation.

I've never shot a compensated pistol... so any info on it would be helpful.
Does anybody make a compensated 9mm, or .40?

I have the HK USP Tactical. This is by far the best hang gun I own. Amazingly accurate. ramps even flat and hollow nosed rounds.

oddly enough I'm in the same dilemma. Only for me it's between the glock 27 and the subcompact XD.

I can get a new xd for about 30$ cheaper then the glock and there's little to no difference between the two feature wise?

                          Anyone want to comment?

As an odd aside, money has never been a factor to me when it comes to this kinda stuff. Well, I mean outside of super-budget items.

I would say get the xd. I have the 45acp in the 4" service model, owned it about a year now, with close to 2000 rounds in it, only a couple hiccups the first night out. I was a bad boy and didn't lube it, from shelf to range with 200 rounds.

My friend has the 5" but it feels a little to front heavy to me, but that not a bad thing.

The glock is great don't get me wrong, I didn't like the grip angel, and the grip just felt to fat to me. If I did not just buy a 1911 I would have got the glock.

If you have not shot the xd it feels like a 1911 to me, others say i'am crazy to get past the plastic feel of the grip I put a piece of tire tube around it. It don't look bad and was cheaper then buying the houge ver.

If it means anything out of the rock island 1911, sig 229, and xd45, the xd is the one gun that gets to go to the range everytime and is used everytime out. It is also the home defense gun.

Now i just got to get a streamlight tl-1 for it.
