you know, i got up the other day and found a 7.62x39mm shell on the floor in my house... i was like huh, terrorists were here. my friend later reminded me that terrorists don't use AK47's, they use airplanes and scuicide bombs.

        Damn, that's sweet!

I was unaware that you you build an AK from a kit...Hmmm.

A couple years ago I put together an AR-15. I got the parts from CMT (Connecticut Machine & Tool) in New Britain, CT, and got a factory tour to boot. They manufacture all the recievers and uppers for Bushmaster, Rock River and a few others, along with many othe AR components.

CMT upper & lower, Bushmaster chrome-lined 4150 16" "lightweight" Dissipator barrel (long handguard, carbine barrel). Izzy muzzle break. Rock River match trigger. That's my son firing it on the day we "broke-it-in" We put a total of 600 rounds through it that afternoon!

Well... what is called a "Kit" is not what you would typicaly think of as a Kit. By that I mean its not a complete unassembled rifle in a box. What it really is, is a Rifle that has been "Demilled" from military surplus in some country so it can be imported. What Demilled means is De-Militarized. In order to satisfy BATFE they have to cut a chunk out of the receiver so that it cannot be reassembled like it was. Removing the third hole in the receiver so that it could not be reassembled as a Fully Automatic rifle. Then the remaining peices can be sold as what is called a Kit. This means that you then have to make or buy a receiver and the nessicary fire control group, in the proper number of US parts to satisfy the regulations.

In the case of the Romanian G kits the rifle was never Full Auto. It was a semi auto. However the regulation requires it to be cut up anyway. The G rifles were issued to their "National Guard" which is sort of their civilian Militia or Youth corp. They see little use and see little action. So they are normaly barely used. And they get surplused and cut up and imported to be sold here.

Typicaly you can get a Kit for anywhere from $80 to $120. Some of them like new. Then you have to buy or bend a receiver. A bent and ready receiver can be had for as little as $55. That has to be obtained through a FFL as it is the regulated part. And an FFL normaly charges a fee to do the transfer. So add around $35 for that. And you can get USA fire control groups for around $35. And to build one like shown you need to install at least 6 US parts. The receiver counts as one part. The fire control group counts as three (Hammer, Trigger and Disconnect) and a wood stock (if you chose to use a different one) counts as three parts. You can use the one that comes with the kit if you want. But then you need two more parts. You could change the piston out and the muzzle break to get those two accomplished.

This is what a "Kit" looks like when you get it.

You can buy kits of most any AK variation. Prices depending on the rarity and condition. The G kits are farily cheap and what I used for this particular build. You can build one of these for around $200-$250 depending on choices of parts and stock. I went a little further with this one and got a USA stock set. So I probably have $300 in this one. Typicaly a well done by a reputable shop version of this would sell for $500 - $600 or so. But you can get it accomplished yourself for $200 or so if you economize.

Yeh, I need me one of them someday.

However, I am currently being reminded of the lessons of keeping a diversified portfolio and my girlfriend is looking at some pretty expensive wedding sites for next year.

perfect solution: shotgun wedding! you get a shotgun, she gets a wedding
