Beautiful! Is that R1 a victim of the "tach" scandal? Better check it out to make sure it's not.

Nice bike Spartan. My good friend and I raced an 06 Raven R1 in his 300ZX Twin Turbo the other night. That was lotsa fun even losing.

          power commander?

if not, a power commander is one of THEE best upgrades for the earlier r1's

Congrats on the new ride. The R1's are great looking and performing machines. I ride with a few people who have em. Unfortuntly at 6' 280lbs i dont fold up so good so sport bikes are not too friendly to me as a only bike and finacially i cant float two bikes but i have always wanted to pick up a older sport bike to take to the track for track days.

I got my new bike only last week and its a GREAT feeling getting a new ride so i cana definatly feel your excitment keep it on two and have fun.

I have no idea what is ment by the tach scandal....This bike has over 16,000 miles on and and it runs great! I am 6 foot 4 inchesd at 250 pounds and I fit it just fine. If the tach is off, that does not matter much as I shift by the sound of the engine...or if I hit the rev limiter, heh.

You lost to a 300zx Twin turbo? ahh come on man, afraid the front wheel is going to come up to much if you start off to fast thats the best part, hahaha. (Oh wait I re-read that, you where in the car and the car lost ooo ok that makes sense.)

Do these R1 come with speed limiters? Cause the previous owner said he had the bike doing 198 mph and it was still pulling..now I know the speedometer can be off by alot at those speeds, but even still damn he must have been flying, lol. When I get the courage to test that out I'll use my GPS...I aint trying to hit no 200 mph though thats for sure.

I think the tach scandal Mango's thinking about is on the 06 R6's. The tachs indicated a few 1000 rpm higher than it was actually reving, and since a 16500rpm redline was one of the selling points there was some controversy. Yamaha offered a full refund to anyone who bought the bike.

Either way, that is a sweet looking bike. I love the Yamaha sportbikes. I don't think they have any sort of speed limiters. You just gotta be able to hold on. I seriously doubt he hit 198 mph on that. I bet you'll top out around 175 - 180. But, your right, bike speedometers are wicked inaccurate. Mine is about 10% off. Well, I guess if it indicated 200, then that's about 180. I guess it's possible.

I love the double pipes, looks awesome. I'd get some stainless brake lines. That thing already goes plenty fast, stopping is the hard part.

Out of curiosity, what'd you pay for it?

The brakes seam to be working alright for now, at least at high speeds, I just need to get used to them at lower speeds. I made both tires skid at the same time trying to stop when I punched it going threw a yellow light only to have the cars stop just after words...I let the rear tire skid like you are supposed to, and luckily the front stayed straight and the bike started to do a endo when I stopped lol...made for some good sounds.

I paid $5500, it's both a good deal and a going price. I was going to try and get it for $5000, and I may have been able to get that in the dead of winter, but now that the season is starting back up the price goes up...I could get $6,000 for it mid season if I wanted. IDK yet if this is a the bike I want to settle with, I am still getting used to it.

We were in the 300ZX. It has 440 RWHP so its not slow and we started the race at 80 where bikes have to fight aerodymanics, but it still wasn't enough to overcome the powerful R1 of course. And yes your bike is electronically limited at 187 MPH. That's the official regulation Japanese bike makers MUST adhere to. Also you should note that above ~150 mph or so bike speedometers are fairly innacurate.

                        Have fun and be careful.

*EDIT* And no, I'm not afraid of lift under acceleration. I went 11.0 on a stock R6. It had more but I couldn't get the 60' much better because clutch was slipping. But 1.9 60's still wheelie the latter half of the 60'.

isnt it better to keep both wheels on the ground for max acceleration? thats what ive been taught and have always heard.

Spartan. what upgrades besides the Pipes are on that thing? with the miles put on usually you will find more then just pipes.

and IF he REALLY hit that speed he HAD to have some sort of turbo AND some sort of power commander im assuming. as the stock r1's are capped at 187?

Of course its better to keep both wheels on the ground. Its unavoidable under WOT in 1st gear (and the 1-2 shift) to keep the front wheel down. And more than likely the previous owner was BSing. That happens a lot with these types of things.

speaking from a physics standpoint: only the rear wheel has a torque applied to it, and therefore if the front wheel comes up, the force due to gravity is applied only at the rear wheel. that will allow a greater force to be applied with the rear wheel without the tire slipping.

is there any practical reason i missed that the acceleration would be greater with both wheels on the ground?
