    hunting knives

ok so im in the market looking for a hunting knife with at least a 10'' blade and have come across alot on ebay, normally i dont buy a knife unless i can feel the steel before i buy it. But some of these prices i cant pass up (its going to be abused so i dont want to spend like 100+ for one). i know know much about numbers, but is 440 stainless steel a good material for a kife that will be abused?

A Ka-Bar knife will suit you. Probably the only knife you will ever need. I've owned one for 7 years now and only sharpened it 3 times.

KA-BAR (aka Kabar or K bar) offers more than 100 high-quality knives - tactical and utility - including knives for hunting, sporting, and military. Choose from bowie knives, Becker knives, EK Commando, folders, fixed knives and more.

    Great knives for under $100

I second the Ka-Bar notion... I picked THIS ONE for like $40 from Bud K...

Always been partial to Buck knives for hunting, but if its going to be as badly abused as you lead on, Ka-Bar is deffinatley the way to go.

To answer your question about 440 stainless: 440 stainless is a grade of stainless steel that contains a high percentage of Carbon which makes it one of the strongest alloys, but it is brittle compared to some softer steels. The knife should hold a sharp well, but will be likely to break if you ever try to use it like a pry bar or a screwdriver.

            Just curious

I love my 40 year old Buck knife and would recommend one to anyone. What are you using it for? A 10" blade is overkill in most cases. Anything that requires a 10" blade would be easier to dress with a very sharp smaller knife and a game saw. Unless, of course, you just want a big ol' knife, which is understandable.

Ditto, trying to stick a 10" blade into a 100lb deer's chest cavity and up the neck to cut the esophagus out ain't gonna be easy.

kershaw makes really good knives. Dont know what they are made of, but I have personally used mine for 5-6 deer. Ive never sharpened it either.
