I tried the Vegas thing - I even took it as far as the Europe thing. She wants her family there so it nixed both of those. Thanks for the help so far, there are some good points here.

Quit fighting it. Weddings are HER day, despite you having to be there too. A nice wedding can set the mood for the rest of your lives together. A crappy one that you insisted on, can be an anchor for life, and always a bone of contention against you.

Ever notice there are no wedding stores that center on the groom?

I lucked out when Chrissy suggested Reno, best $600 I ever spent

Hawaii - Beach - Fly the parents out there for a few days. Everyone wins.

My wife an I went cheap. Consignment stores for dresses, mid afternoon wedding so we could serve passed hors d'oeuvres for food, made our own beer, bought costco wine and camped for a large part of our honeymoon. We still spent $11,000. You should REALLY take the time to google Hawaiian wedding packages. Expedia has packages for two starting at about $1300. Fly all the parents there with you so the family is around, and simply send out an invitation to every one else telling them the location, date, and time.

If not. Don't be cheap or stubborn, your future wife will NEVER forgive you if the wedding doesn't go the way SHE wants it. A few grand isn't worth years and years of being reminded of how HER wedding wasn't perfect. We had issues at our wedding that were completely out of both her and my control, my wife still brings them up. Remember, this is really her day, no matter how we look at it.

edit: one last thing, this is not a negotiation, it's a wedding.

After the stress and issues we had with our wedding, my wife will tell me that she should have taken my suggestion and gone to Vegas.

Just keep in mind that whatever ideas you have already or that you get from here will mean nothing when the bride-to-be decides what she wants.

I've been engaged for a little over a year with the wedding coming up in July. There are certain things I'm allowed to choose and certain things I'm not.
              Before: "You're playing with WHAT?"
After: "Crap! It's that guy with the pump!"

I'll also attest that paying someone to take the pictures is a good idea as well ... our pictures were a disaster ... should have paid a professional not associated with the family in any way.

I actually told her this at one point. Her cousin or something does photography - as a professional and we had the discussion about why not to use. Even if they are the consumate professional there is always a chance that something goes wrong, and its better if it can be someone you can be mad at.

Our photographer was a friend, and someone my wife shoots with quite regularly.... worked out well until she got more drunk than we were Pictures kinda stopped at that point so we missed a few good moments.

Hired help tends to stay sober for the show - another good reason to hire someone

If my wife would make up her mind, I could show you some of her work.. but she hasn't given me the pics for her website yet.

You have a location picked out beach wise out there?

My wife and I have a lot of experience catering, and were asked by my cousin to cater his upcoming wedding. While we were flattered, we'd rather not take the chance of something going wrong, and causing a ruckus within the family because of it.

I have to make sure the beach idea is good still - I am thinking Michilinda lodge / Camp Minwanca (they have rain alternates). Otherwise we have Silver Lake / Meinert Park state parks as well as a county park I can probably work something out on. I also have a few associates who live on the big lake.

                                hire out the workers!!!!

yeah involving friends and family can be tough -

A good friend of mine did our cake, and up until a week before our wedding she had access to a full on commercial kitchen at a really nice golf club, and she did the desserts for them, and supplied a small pastry shop where she lives...

Hubby gets a sweet promotion at work, she quits the pastry business all together and stays at home with the kids...

She ends up making our cake in her oven at her house - while trying to take care of thier kids - Looked OK, but not "wedding" quality by any means - but still tasted pretty good.
