Anyone else here that doesn't get it?

Is there anyone on here other than me that doesn't understand the greatness of text messaging? It just seems so absurd that punching away on the keypad of your phone typing scrambled/condensed/made up words could be so much fun. There was a video on here a while back saying that every day there are more text messages sent than there are people in the entire world... That's beyond ridiculous, because you know that probably only a fraction of the earth's population has cell phones, and only a fraction of those people send text messages. Seems to me that these damn cell phones will someday be the downfall of civilization.

My wife (yeah she does the whole text message thing) was telling me today that her best friend was snooping around on one of her roomates phones and found dirty messages and pictures from one of my cousins to this guy. Now my cousin is like 35 (the guy with the phone is 21) and a mother of two boys aged around 8 and 6. Her husband died almost exactly a year ago, he was struck by lightening. Now how the hell does a person like that get "into" text messaging. You would think that she'd have enough crap to do taking care of her children and working that she wouldn't have the time to get started with it. Also what the hell... you're not supposed to go around sending naked pictures of yourself to people you hardly even know! Hell you're not even supposed to send them to people you know well! You shouldn't even take pictures of yourself naked!!!!! WTF is wrong with everyone!

I'm sure that as you're reading this some of you probably will be thinking that I sound like an old man. I'm only 22, but I sure as hell feel like an old man. Having a wife, 2 kids, a house, a farm to manage, equipment to fix, and cattle and other animals to take care of, has given me a no-nonsense mentality of an old man. When it comes to my cell phone I've had it almost two years and have made a total of 1719 calls and the total time of all those calls is 2224 minutes. That makes my average call about a minute and eighteen seconds long and I average less than 3 calls a day. I bet 96% of those calls were either to or from my wife and or my father, 3% were from my friends, and 1% were wrong numbers/phone solicitors. I'd actually rather not have a damn phone because most the time when I get a call I'm busy and have to drop everything I'm doing just to answer the damn thing. Annoys the hell out of me! In fact at one point in time my wife was afraid to call me because she could tell how irritated I got when I had to answer the phone. In the past two years that I've had this particular phone I have recieved 3 text messages, 2 from my friends who I promptly called up and asked them why, and one that was sent to me on accident (wrong number).

In conclusion, cell phones annoy me, I don't understand why people like text messaging, and I feel like they will be the eventual downfall of our society because no one will get a damn thing done because they're too busy jacking around with their phones. Anyone else feel this way?

/sorry for the long rant, I couldn't sleep with this going on in my head

I like texting due to its disconnected nature. I can make minimal contact with people I dislike when it is required of me.

I don't have texting services anymore so I suck it up like a man and talk to them.

Texting is also convenient during parties, class, court dates, weddings, etc. because it is far less intrusive than a phone call. Of course, you shouldn't be on the phone during those times anyway.

about the numbers, cell phones minutes are actually really expensive in Europe and text messaging is free. So allot of kids text alot...it may have change since I last lived abroad. Funny, cause we pay way to much for minutes and then they charge us for text etc too

I've actually been doing research on this for a while and get this: I'm a Verizon customer and I subscribe to Verizon's "IN" calling promotion. For those of us that don't know what I'm talking about... it means I get to talk to anyone with a verizon number for free. Anyway, so to check my voice mail I dial my own number. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm calling a verizon number from a verizon phone, ISN'T THAT "IN" CALLING? wtf verizon?

Another thing that irritates me is that fact that I get random text messages all the time and picture messages too. I do not have the option to not-receive a message so in the mean time verizon charges me .50 cent for a media message and .15 cent for text messages. My bill is usually 3-5$ higher JUST because of this crap I could care less about.

Then there is international long distance, I pay 4$ a month so I CAN call outside the country but get charged an extra .07 cent for each minute I'm calling.

And verizon replaces the manufacturers programing with their own. In doing so the phone is littered with options to log on to their downloading service. As soon as you hit that button to connect you start to incur charges for bytes of information transfered even if you never saw a thing. And of course your gonna hit those options all the time cause they are #1 on every list.

And my favorite complaint.....they charge so much for their phone that if you ever cancel your contract and pay the 175$ you've payed for the phones MSRP and then some. They make good money thats for sure. Unfortunately almost every company have these "hidden fees" they just don't tell you about them....

When you text girls, they get to the point, and you get your message.

The second you pick up the phone, dont plan on hanging it up for 45 minutes.

I'm 38 and I don't text message at all, but I'll make an exception for her.
                She's just havin' a little fun/excitement.
I hope you haven't said anything to her???

I have never texted, I make about 2 call's a week on my phone, they last for about 10 minutes each. I hate talking on the phone.

Time to go beat supper to death with a club and drag it back to my cave.

On a side note, has anyone else ever noticed: on my drive to work in the morning, say 6:30 or so, all sorts of people talking on their cell phones. Who the holy heck are they calling at 6:30 in the morning! If some one called me to chit chat at 6:30am ....well I already stated I hate talking on the phone.

I'm with you there... The past couple days I've been ripping testicles out of bulls for lunch! We ended up with over a 5 gallon bucket full of nuts out of 27 bulls! Two nuts will make a full meal for a single person, so that's 27 meals right there! LOL.

And for anyone that asked, no you can't have my cousin's number because I don't even know it. LOL. And no, no one has said anything to her, and probably won't either.

It's disconnected communication to match our disconnected society.

...And the fact that it's quick and clean for short conversations. I'm a college guy who has unlimited texting on his mobile plan. So, not only is it easier to type one message and send it to ten friends, but it saves my minutes for more important calls.

I use it for the exact things that you hate answering your phone for. If someone needs to tell me something (we're out of juice, etc.) its easier to leave a message that I can get when I do. If they call, I answer it immediatly which can be an annoyance.
