    Backpacking Europe

Im looking to do europe next year, has anyone else here backpacked it? I need some tips. We dont really have a plan, just meeting a buddy in the UK and getting some rail passes and making it up as we go.... any idea how much cash would be needed? im thinking hitting the hostals would be the best and cheapest way, but Im just cerious if any one else has done it?

I've spent a fair amount of time in Europe. I'd highly recommend looking into Eastern Europe versus the sort of standard rail passes, Louvre, hostels, and tours.

It's a lot cheaper, so much so that you can stay in fairly nice places. There will be a lot of tourists at the popular destinations, but they tend to be European tourists, which is much better than than what you'll get in popular destinations.

I was all over for about four months, hit Slovakia, Slovenia, Netherlands, and mainly Croatia, Serbia, and Italy. Italy was cool, but the Eastern cities blew it away.
God....I guess I was probably returning videotapes.

Hostals are fine. If you plan on really moving around Europe get a rail pass. You can get by in pretty much any European city for about 60e a day if you do it right. Hostels should run you around 15-30e depending. I stayed in one in Amsterdam when I was there a few years back and it ran 17e/night. Just don't forget to hide your valuables up your anus!!

Food can be bought on the cheap easily. 2 euro 50 will get you a pizza bread and soda in Wiesbaden on the walkplatz. May have gone up a bit but its still a great deal... If you really want to save, don't act like an American. Anything you think you want to do, don't. Don't be affraid to go places you wouldn't normally go and do the things you wouldn't do. Check out the dive. Menu's and prices are posted outside by law, so you know what you'll be paying. Red light district, don't pay more than 30e. Enough said.

well im really open to anything, i was thinking about 2 months. we were talking about doing germany to spain, and then what ever else we (or I) feel like after that. when i go over I should have no, and i mean NO future comitments, so it can be pretty open ended. im not much for the big tourist stuff, i dont need to go to the louve (or however you spell it) or any of that crap, i just want to go have and advinture.
oh and i was thinking of bringing a guitar, but now im thinking it might just get in the way. however i could always sell it if it does

Really, you work for a City? Wow, I didn't know that cities actually employed people. Well sure, government employees but this is way cooler. To actually be hired by a city. So what do you do?

Any who...... So anything worth while to add or just coming in to stink up the place?

Lived in Europe for 3 years. By no means makes me an expert but pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. As far as the others, 2 others to be exact, what did they say that was so wrong? Please educate all of us, we are not worthy
