Getting Back in the Game. Is this gun out dated?

Hello all. I was a paintball die hard back in late 80s to the early to mid 90s. Back when Bushmasters and phantom guns rocked. Just before I got out of the sport I bought a 68 auto-mag. What I believe is what is being sold today as a "classic". From what I am reading on-line and on this site, I believe this gun is still a quality gun and is still used today. Also, I think I need to do some up grades. I want to get back in the game. Can some one tell me if this gun is worth upgrading. If so what upgrades do you recommend. Please list from most important to least.

    Thanks

It's worth upgrading if that's what you want to do. How much is up to you and your wallet.

    My recommendations-

    Xvalve
    ULE Body
    Intelliframe

I was very much in the same boat as you. In the late 80's and early 90's I was a rabid player playing few tournaments and playing LOTS of stock (stock mind you, not pump) on Sundays. Recently I was invited to play in a private game as a stand in for my wife. I blew the dust of my mag which I bought in 1991? and had not even aired up for at least 5 years and headed to the field.

(as a side note, taking my old C02 tanks for a fill at the local shop was even more fun, the newest of which was FIVE YEARS out of date and the oldest, a 10oz that serves as a monopod if I cary my marker too low (old timers know what I am talking about).

Anyway.... I showed up at the field and the private game did not happen because it was sprinkling.... Being dressed and ready I went ahead and played, hopping into one of the many walk on games the field had running on that Saturday. I took some lip from some kid about my mag, it's vertical 20oz CO2 bottle and the first generation 9v VL but I told him... "paint still comes out the barrell the same way".

Anyway... by the end of the day I was happy and quite secure with my very rusty abilities and happy with my mag having shot out enough people that day to feel guilty.

My advice to you is: Get a genuine AGD parts kit, swap out the O-rings, oil it up and go have fun. Sure you might not be pumping out 15+ balls per second but if you need that kind of crutch.......

      Viva la Automag!

All those upgrades total 585. Am I better off just starting with a new gun? If so what do you suggest?

if you're just getting back into the game.. i would suggest what i tell my other friends who are looking for a marker.. go to the forums and try to buy the used parts! most ppl know that the ppl on automags.org have great quality used parts that they would like to sell. look on the forum b/s/t. you'll be getting the great ADG quality at a reduced price. Unless you really want them new.

If you're looking to fully deck out on a marker i would get the x-valve BUT IMHO the R/T pro valve w/ lvl10 is just as good.. but heavier.

Buy according to the position you want to play.

But def rebuild that old adg marker.. it'll make a great spare.

          that's my advice.

In my humble opinion its definetly not worth upgrading a classic mag. Keep it for a backup or for friends when they play.

You can use the gun just as you used to. No upgrades are really needed, go out play with it, and determine what YOU want to add to it. The only thing I really recommend is getting an HPA tank. It makes the mag just about trouble free. Look around this site and see what others are doing to their guns and shop around for used parts. Also, you may want to rebuild the air valve, especially if it has been sitting around awhile.

Hey. It is a good gun and I would just leave it the way it is for rec play.

If you are thinking of upgrading think of this:
an x valve is $325 ($225 if you give them your old valve)

An inteli frame costs $115 also not a bad upgrade to replace an old classic frame.

However...an rt pro custom is $430 with an inteli frame and is a whole new gun.
buying an x valve and inteli frame is $440.

When it comes to upgrading a classic mag you may aswell just get a rt pro for the same or less price.

Sure you can knock $100 bucks off and trade in your old valve but is it worth it? Keeping the old valve gives you a whole other gun in this case.

For that price you can have an rt pro custom with all of those upgrades AND a ultra light trigger kit (factory installed) AND a warp feed which comes at half price when you get a WARP ULE body with the RT pro custom AND still have change left over :)

Yes, especially if you are looking to play with people who own the guns of today. Honestly, again, like always I will get flamed for this. Spend $250 and buy a SmartParts Ion. I did, and I am very happy with it. Shoots like a much more expensive gun, has eyes, has a board with semi, fullauto, burst, ramping, etc. VERY upgradeable.

The Ion is a very cost effective gun and is a good choice but it is a very ugly gun :P

You gusy are missing the point.

Spend over $400 on a new Mag, and How much better is it? does it shoot farther? does it shoot more accurate? NOPE. Sure there are some advantages in the new gun, but not enough to justify trashing a good gun for a new one, unless you determine you need/like a new one.

So why not go out and play and see if what you have works for your playing style.

Remeber, the gun doesnt make the player. The solution isnt automaticly to "Buy" a better gun.
If you wanna go out and play speedball and everyone at your local field uses ramping and high rates of fire, you may want to upgrade guns.

                          BUT

If you go out and play rec-ball with the walkons, you dont need to trick your gun out. Just use whatever works for you. Not whateveryone tells you, you NEED.
