What Is an Automag and how do I make one

This is obviously a stupid question, but I truly do not know whether you guys are talking about a premanufactured product, sold as one item called the Automag; or if it is a personal sreation made from scratch. I have found out what the Pneumag is, (I think) and have figured out the diagrams that were on one of the threads here.

I want your guys' help to understand how to make an Automag. (or buy one) I have seen and heard so many good things about Automags, and respect that they have been around for a long time.

I have noticed that you guys use programs that graph in 3d to design your pieces, I have a copy of Autocad '07 available to me for free, (from my Engineering classes at school) do you recommend it for designing parts?

Ok, assuming that you are serious, I'll bite.

Automags are manufactured by Airgun Designs Inc. and have been since at least 1992. In the early 90's they were considered cutting-edge and are still considered so by some. They consist of a valve, body, trigger frame and rail and are highly modular.

You can purchase an Automag new from http://www.airgundesignsusa.com or http://www.tunamart.com/ (an authorized distributor)

      or

Im hoping hes serious, but you could also build a Mag from parts that you find on here. Thats always a way to go aswell. But i would suggest since you have never had 1 b4, that you go ahead and buy a fairly cheap 1 on here, and then customize part by part. Would be alot easier since you dont have a clue on where to start if your flat out wanna go from scratch. There are always an on going project as there are so many parts available in such a wide range of colors and ideas. They are great guns no matter what you end up doing. Happy Magging

Unfortunatly there seems to be alot of people who dont know what automags are. I dont see too many myself, other than the circle of mag owners I sometimes play with.

I understand how you guys could take me as not being serious. I am, fortunately, this clueless about Automags. I have no one in my local paintball community who even mentions Automags, or for that matter owns one.

When you say "build a Mag from parts that you find on here," do you mean this forum, automags.org, AGD.com, or some other place that I'm not catching.

I have looked at the mainbodies on AGD as well as the X valve and TeamBob's thread on pneumags, do all of these parts just fit together or is a little milling or parts manufacturing required?

The X-Valve is both a bolt and aluminum version of the ReTro valve, or is it just the latter.

            your getting it

Your catching on. I do believe your correct about the X valve, someone else may to to say that for sure, but i think thats right. Anyways, except for the Orgi. AutoMag RT, 99% of Mag parts will just bolt together. The Pneumag is a little bit different, but only in the trigger frame, it does require a bit of milling to get a pneumatic trigger frame. The Emag stuff im not so sure about how well the bolt up and on non emag things (such as the rail, body and trigger frames). Somebody else im sure will be glad to answer that for you.

The main parts a a Mag consists of are these: Main body, Rail(goes between the main body and trigger frame), trigger frame, trigger, Valve(such as the X which you mentioned), Asa, forgrip and barrel. (Anyone else feel free to mention anything i missed)

Now, forgetting about the orig. RT gun, all of these parts jsut bolt together no problem. And yes, This would probably the best place (atleast to start) if you wanted to ''build a mag from parts you find on here'' If you wanted to go that route, as you start buying, or atleast getting interested in parts that are for sale, just mention to the seller what you are doing and if the parts will work or fit together.

I will tell you this, If you choose to join the Mag family, you will be welcomed with open arms. Everyone on this board is very nice and willing to help anyone. As you can see by the answering to your post on here. I would draw a comparison between Mag owners and VW owners, esp. with the older beatles. If you know anything about that, you know what im talking about.

If your car comparison is as accurate as I assume it is, then I think I will definately be catching the mag fevah sometime soon.

All I need is a few good websites that you guys have used to get rails, mainbodies and triggers. (trigger frames) I already have AGD online and Tunamart.

For all other paintball gear and other items not relating to the other categories. This now includes air tanks and systems.

Wait, so where do the guys in the classifieds get their rails is not tunamart. And where do those guys get theirs from?

Basically, who manufactures the Automag rails, if not AGD? (and if AGD manufactures them, then why don't they sell rails in their online store?)

Well that was a lot more obvious than I thought it would be, I just thought it would be under upgrades, I never even thought to look under "spare aprts" how stupid of me.

You'd probably have to find one used on here.

'Mags are great, they can't be beat as far as upgradeability goes.

The valves actually consist of a regulator, a valve, a powertube, the bolt, and the bolt-spring.

Aside from the trigger and sear, the valve assembly would be the only operating part of the marker and it entirely slides out of the mainbody with the removal of a single screw.

I think they are the simplest guns to maintain because of this, plus they are built like tanks. They don't need to be taken apart completely to keep in working order, just a drop of oil in the asa every now and then and remove the bolt to clean broken paint and that's it.

Everything is interchangeable between automags besides the Classic Automag RT, the tolerances are just barely off though so they might be able to be adapted.

The only parts that need work to fit are, as was mentioned above the pneumag kit, and a warp left/right bodies. For these there needs to be a slot milled on the rail so the feedneck will sit flush.

One thing I will say, the normal automag barrels for the steel mainbodies are twist lock. They can be pretty hard to find, but if you get a modern ULE body it will have Autococker threads.

For your first gun I wouldn't try to build one from scratch. At first look they can be pretty complex, though in reality they are quite simple, in the valves and such I mean.
Buying all the parts and assembling it is easy enough as long as you are sure you have the correct on/off and sear for your valve.
Try to pick up a used RT Pro or RT ULE or even a TAC-ONE. Or even go later and pick up a Classic Automag .68 or MiniMag. They will get you going in the 'Mag world and allow you to do whatever you want to them.

The E/X-mags are very good as well, though they can be hard to come by and are expensive.

Just take some time and look in the gallery. The first pages are dead so I'd start in the back and work to the front. Just see what is out there and get a feel for what you want and of course don't hesitate to ask questions.

                              Welcome to the 'Mag addiction
