    Spring fed mag body

I was disappointed when I received a direct feed classic mag some time ago. The feed neck was broken off and very poorly rewelded. I immediately bought a replacement body and the shattered remains of the original were haunting my tool box since.

But no longer. I have removed the feed neck and welded a custom spring feed to the body.

The spring feed is a 7/8 .065 wall stainless tube. It has a milled "J" slot and all the internals from an Ariakon spring feed magazine. I basically copied the Ariakon mag with some slight variation onto the stainless. It was an easy modification but did require the help of a friend who milled the slot for me. I drilled and welded the rest myself. Assembly was very easy as all the Ariakon components fit internally exactly without modification.

I added a Ring Mount to the side to hold a Tac-one foregrip ASA. To this I attached a 12 gram changer and used macro line to supply the valve.

The grip frame is Benchmark and the barrel is a Minimag stock barrel. The valve is a Micromag valve with level 7.

There are 2 things left to do. They are to sandblast the body so it looks "factory" and to mill a drop-out slot on the 12 gram changer.

I thought I would share this with everyone as I dont intend to make another and it may be of interest to some of the custom builders.

So now the photos. I hope you like it.

Nice. Another use of the dovetail am rail.

Did your micromag valve turn out to be gas efficient? I've heard some are and some aren't.

Someone here (sorry) screwed the vert adapter directly to the valve with a short nipple and some loctite. Yours looks more sturdy and easier to change but with more parts.

Gas efficiency is very good. I hadnt heard this valve was any different. I think because the macro line is so short it helps.

I like the idea of a direct link with a nipple but I may want to put a different body on this marker sometimes and that would make changing the gas supply harder. It is pretty sturdy and might carry it in big games as a back up, lol.

Ya a shorter barrel would be good I think. No I posted the pictures so everyone could make their own. I won't be selling this one any time soon. Glad you like it.

            thanks i gotcha
i think i could do most of it accept for fitting the quick changer in place
oh i forgot to mention i would also put a single trigger on it
            how accurate is it?
i have a tag 8 and i love it, bt a pistol mag would be sweet

The quick changer is mounted using a scope ring on the side of the AM rail. Its an easy set up. I will post a picture when I get the body back. I sent it to the sandblaster.

how many rounds does that feed tube hold?

Very nice setup. It seems pistol mags are like the new pumpmag. Everyone is doing it...

I too am building a pistol mag. Still haven't figured out the feedtube portion.

Any one know where to find a good spring for this type of application?

The tube is 7/8 diameter .065 (thick) wall stainless tube. The parts including the spring are the internals of a Ariakon spring mag for the Overlord. I think you should be able to buy a used Overlord mag for $15 - $20 and thats all the parts you need.

Youll need to make a slot on the tube , thats the hard part. Drilling all the other holes is easy. If you can find someone to weld the tube to the body your finished.

The tube hold 10 rounds the same as the Overlord mag. You could probably add 1 or 2 more rounds by making the tube longer without any problems.

Hey man, hows it hanging? I make these RNC tubes but I have people asking me to make the spring loaders but I need some help.

How long is the spring tube, end to end?

How long is the spring not compressed?

How many coils in the spring total?

How long is the guide slot in the tube?

What is the diemeter of the spring steel? (If you have a set of calipers)

Would you be willing to post pictures of the plunger parts?

                    Thanks.

Buy one of these > http://www.ariakon.com/cat2.asp?mode...RK-OVERLORDMAG

It has all the specs built in. You can make the J slot 3/16 inch wide instead of 1/8 inch. That allows the spring to move more freely. You could change the distance from the end to the feed hole so you can use a standard automag power feed plug. That would make it more standard for mag owners then having an Ariakon plug. Also rotate the tube so the feed hole is 135 degrees instead of 180 degrees from the J slot. That way the J slot doesnt end up facing straight up. It wouldnt get rain or debris in it as easiely that way. Those are my only suggestions for changes.

I really like the photos in your link Luke. Thats nice work.

Yup thats it. I still have the mag shell but I gave it to my friend to make me a couple more tubes with the "J" slot. When hes done I'll get it back. I could send it but you wouldnt have the plugs or the spring. Check around for a cheap complete mag it would be more helpfull.

i'll keep my eyes out for a complete one. Depending on what I can find I may be interested in your mag shell. Let me know if and when you get it back.

Because of this thread I have laid awake thinking about this project for the last 3 days.

LOL, I'm not interested in buying, I'm interested in manufacturing. I'll get the info elsewhere, thanks.
