    Custom Mag build

I decided after 4 or 5 years of regulating my minimag to a back up/ loaner gun to start playing with it again this past summer. It had a chrome minimag body, VL vertical grip, benchmark double trigger frame, and J&J SS barrel. It was basicly as heavy as you could make it. I up graded with a ULE body, J&J ceramic barrel, and a ULE'd the rail.

It was fine but I decided I wanted something different. I looked around at other mags and came across the SFL mags and liked the look of them. That got me thinking of building something similar. I got a chunk of aluminum and went to work.

The first thing I needed to do was mill the body blank flat and square on all 6 sides. I then put it in the 4 jaw chuck in my lathe. I worked from the valve end forward so the first operation was to drill and counter bore for the vlave and breach all the way through the body.

The only thing left to do in the lathe was flip the blank around and put the barrel threads and counter bores in on the oposite end.

    More to come tonite.

Now that the lathe work was done. I started on the milling. I put all the critical things in first. The sear slot, the sear pivot point, the valve thumbscrew hole, the feedneck hole, and the slot for the valve pin.

At this point it was actually a functional one shot gun.

dont forget to get a steel washer in the body to keep your mainspring from chewing up the aluminum on the inside

      amazing work though

Now that all the critical things were done I could wotk on shaping and shaving down the body. I decided to go with autococker detents rather than angel detents. I also went with a Ion feedneck rather than a angel feedneck. The cheapest I could find a angel feedneck tap was $90 a Ion feedneck tap was $15.

More milling and shaveing got me to this point finish point. The only thing I added that isn't pictured is a second detent. I took the gun out for a day of play it ran fine so it was ready for anodizing.

I sent it out to TheFool for the anodizing work. I think he did a really good job and for a good price. Here are the pics he sent me of it done.

The final assembly is a custom body, custom foregrip, custom roller bearing blade trigger, modified benchmark frame, 1911 Alien textured grips, J&J S2 autococker barrel, X valve with level 10, ULT trigger, CP autococker detents, clamping feedneck.

Yes, there is a heat treated 420 stainless steel body bushing in it.

That is great work, very nice indeed.

Why didn't you go ahead and make a new frame for it, everything else is custom!!

Looks great, I envy your ability to create.

Even though it doesn't look like it the frame has been slimed down .100". I also filed and rounded all the edges, drilled and taped it for a trigger stop. I was going to checker the back strap of the grip like a 1911 but I got lazy. I guess I will have to enter it then in the MOTM. I will be building more of these for my teammates.

Nuf said... I'm totally NOT going to enter my two newly built markers in MOTM until this one goes through and wins! Totally fantastic work here.
