    Broken tap

I broke a 6-32 tap in my grip frame. There isn't enough of the tap sticking out of either side of the hole to grab with pliers or anything. I'm guessing the only way to get it out is the drill it with maybe a 1/16" drill bit or something. Does anyone have any ideas on getting this thing out? I would like to not damage the threads that it has already made so I don't have to go with a bigger screw size. I can post a pic of it if anyone would like to see what I'm working with. There is about 3/8" of tap stuck in the back of the frame.

You need a carbide drill bit and some sort of jig or top side to hold the bit straight. That or a few hours poking it with little sharp points.

        Too easy...

        or

        Both work very well.

You can sometimes get a scribe or anything with a sharp point and try to turn it out.

Im thinking of calling some local machine shops tomorrow to see if they can help me out. This was the last hole I had to tap in my pnuemag project . It is still in working condition, but the bracket the holds the msv-2 isn't as solid as I would like with only one screw holding it.

It still shoots very well. I am pleased with the conversion, but I would like to get the tap outta there so I can get things nice and solid.

I will take a look at those easy outs. I didn't think there was one small enough to get at the 6-32 tap. I am trying to get this sucker out w/o damaging the threads that have already been made.

Have ANY of you guys tried to drill a broken tap ?? , I won't list the fun you will have
Really with a tap this small about all you can do is work it out , do you have axcess to the " front " of the tap ? , I have a pair of forceps ( hemostats ) with very small tips ( I made'em that way ) get ahold of it & try to start workin it right/left , right/left , right/left , use the best lube you have , back & forth , back & forth , back & forth , if your really lucky you will get it out

                This guy speaks the truth.

to my knowledge they do not make easy outs for a 6-32 tap, and good luck drilling it if they do.

a pick set works wonders. Along with lube. Lots of it. Tap on it slightly in the reverse direction that you were installing it with a small punch. blowing on it with compressed air also helps.

If you cant get it out bring it to AO south in November(I see you are in SC so you must come), and I will get out for you. I cant tell you how many taps I have broke in my life. Anytime you get in a hurry with a tap it breaks. Thank god for Snap-on's / Craftsman's lifetime replacement warranty.

Take a torch...heat it cherry red. Let it cool by itself...slowly. Then MAYBE a Cobalt drill bit and easy out.

I'm not sure that you would want to torch your frame. I would guess that it would ruin the finish.

They make left handed drill bits, hopefully it'll bite and exposes enough for you to grip it with pliers. Might be the only way without damaging anything.

A carbide center cutting end mill will work better than a drill with lots of oil and go very slow. A end mill that small is going to break very easily though. A machine shop can burn it out if they have a electrode tap burner but its going to be a couple hour job to set it up and burn it out. Depending on the shop rate it could be pretty pricey to take that one tap out and buying another grip frame might be cheaper.
