How do you make stuff from plastic/resins/whatever?

I was just wondering how people can make stuff out of plastic. There was mention of casting something for a mask that made it look like a cat fang or something like that over in Paintball Talk. Also, I know people can make grips out of plastic and stuff. I was wondering just how you could learn to do that, where to get the supplies, etc. Any info is greatly appreciated. I'd really like to learn how to do this kind of thing.

Hook a shop vac to a wooden box, drill many holes in sealed lid of box, set mold ( the model you want to copy) on sealed lid with holes, lay sheet of plexiglass you heated in the oven at 300- 350 degrees, beware the fumes, fire up shop vac, allow to cool. This is an art and takes time and practice. There is a website which sells the full kit at an exorbitant price or you could visit home depot.

Get the right kind ok plastic and you can machine it like metal, only slightly more smelly. Delrin in particular is easy to work with but strong as hell. The only warning is that the stronger the plastic the more it costs.

If I wanted to, say, mold grips, how would that work?

Warmplastic.com, though grips are a type of rubber. I have no idea how to work with that stuff.

There are a lot of different was to do it. You can start with a peace that is already made by putting it in a box, pour rubber over it, let it cure, remove the peace from the rubber and then use the mold made from rubber to cast the peace's.

The ones here: http://www.automags.org/forums/showthread.php?t=142634 I do from an aluminum mold I milled. The molds are 6 peace "break away" that are injected with rubber.

It can be tricky trying to figure out what compounds to use, so far it's just trial and error for me. If you have something specific in mind you want to make let me know, I'll help you out if I can....

Nah, I got nothin specific in mind, I just thought it might be a useful skill to have. I like to fiddle around with different ways to do stuff and thought plastics might be fun. Where do you get the plastics that you use to melt down?

Remove piece from mold to reveal exact casting of desired item. These molds hide no sins, any imperfections will be transferred to finished product:
