a friend of mine picked up an ion right after they came out and basically rebuilt the gun over time. the only thing that was stock was the trigger frame assembly. it turned out to be decent, personally not my bag but it was decent.

now this was a while ago and i have no idea what is out there now but the big things he did was body (at that time only after market ones had the back bolt strip), reg, qev, bolt, grips.

i cant remember much of anything else.

the guns can be made to be pretty nice guns but they just still arent my bag personally

good luck, its really cool that you are doing this for your friend

The Tboard for the Ion is pretty sweet
      it supports a Dye membrane
and it comes with a better than stock solenoid

I have to say, I am actually impressed with the aftermarket parts available for this marker. These markers were released about as low brow as it comes as still operational. It is kind of nice to spend money on an upgrade/aftermarket part and have it actually DO something for the marker. It is really good to see all the grassroots stuff dedicated to these.
I picked up a critical trigger for it today. Installed it and it is seriously butter. A whole world of difference over that plastic piece of junk for a trigger that was installed.
I also have a body kit coming that will allow me to drop the bolt out the back for cleaning. As easy as it is to mess up the board and related hoses and what not, I am quite suprized it took this long for SP to offer that as a "stock" option.

In a lot of ways it is a neat idea. You make a really inexpensive, but inherently capable marker design that is easily within the reach of most anyone. You take your grass cutting money each week and throw a few dollars at upgrades here and there, and before you know it you have a decent marker, one that you can realize an appreciable difference in performance and looks. I mean in feel and functionality alone the less than $65 spent on a clamping feed and a decent trigger do WONDERS.
You certainly could have thrown more money at something else and gotten a more well designed piece in the first place, but if you like to tinker and build it up as you go it certainly fits the bill.

          Here's what I'd do...

Break it and buy him a Mini as a replacement...

Just kidding. The Blackheart boards are supposed to be a lot better than the stock and I've seen them go pretty cheap. If he doesn't have any cocker barrels and doesn't think he's going to by another marker that is cocker threaded, what's the purpose of the converter?
          I went like this :shooting:
He went like this :tard: then like this :wow: then like this
Now he shoots a Mag too...

well cocker threading is something that isnt going away, barrels are easy to find in cocker threading and if the barrel doesnt come in cocker threads its either a specialty barrel that to get it converted to AC threads would not be much more than the price, the barrel is a stock barrel (like phantom barrels), or the manufacture is extremely old (dont know really of any that fit this) or extremely new (and either will make AC threads or fail, and again nothing off the top of my head that fits)

at this point i would probably not buy a gun based solely on the fact it doesnt have AC threads unless i was getting a good barrel or kit with it or i could get the breach re-threaded or swapped out (have 2 full kits, and 4 2 piece barrels that can be expanded into kits that are all AC threads and i dont want to pay the 300+ to be able to use those kits on a different marker)

The cocker threaded breech was an option I was going to put on just as matt explained, so that better barrels were easier to find. Not to mention how many of them I currently have...lol, but it turns out that he already owns an Imp threaded freak back for this, so I decided against the breech.

I got in the body and reg kit today and got that on. The damn QEV won't fit inside the frame where it goes, its too tall. I am going to take it back up to the shop and see what the issue is. It says epiphany on the box, but I was of the assumption that it would have been the same.

i remember my friend having a lot of issues with the qevs but again that was when the ions were pretty green

come on you should convert him to the side of cockers, even if it is only the barrel threading

Actually my buddy is an old cocker enthusiast. He had sold off most of his gear and picked this up at a MOUT game after his trusty Spyder Flash quit working.
