Use a brass barrel. Not much more steampunk than brass.
If you send Palmers your body, that can line the barrel up with it and then put a bead sight on the barrel too.
I've been looking for one of the old brass Palmers Rock front regs to use on a stempunk pnumag idea I've been tossing around.

Ok i guess time for an update. I have finished the foregrip to my liking buti made the mistake of going to a woodcraft store and found an exotic wood i would like to make it out of instead but i decided to push that idea out of my head since i have already remade the foregrip twice and finally got it the way i like. I am going to pick up some car gauges to set into the foregrip tommorow. I also picked up some brass rivets from a leather store. Im still not sure what i want to do about the grips i was thinking about making some nice wood ones or going with my original idea of using clear plastic grips with some clock work behind them but i need to order more gears if i do that. My friend jimmy also suggested make some out of some tarnished brass of copper. I have the gun itself put together just waiting on the sightglass that will become the scope then i wil start the detail work. but im gonna put it all on hold for a few days cause i wanna build my new workbench first and get a grinder ans a mini table saw which will happen friday. Ill post picturs of the mocked up mag in a bit before i start the detail painting on it.

Ever since seeing this thread I have been thinking about a bicycle chain driven warp feed. Even if it was only cosmetic. Some extra air lines, possibly some hard lines will kind of make an automag body look like a steam locomotive. I know you mentioned a spy glass type scope but have you looked at any WWII anti aircraft sights (just really a gigantic crosshair)?
