So your examples of "Hey look at Tom Kaye, he's a genius!" Well yes he is, but I already excluded him from my examples.

misspellings doin't bother me that much. as long as it's readable. when you use another word instead and spell that correctly it confuses me more than a simple misspelling. the one that i see most often is to "be weary of bad traders" it seems like people have heard this word spoken but never seen it written. the word is "wary". you want to be careful, not tired.

            BIGJON:

I am 15 also, and I next to never read back over my posts for spelling/grammar mistakes. I don't type a rough draft or anything, but after paying attention in school (mostly keyboarding class) it's a habit to type in plain English.

What's really funny is when you correct someone and they say, "OH COEM ON YOU AER A FLAEMER BOOK WURM WE AER NOT IN SKCHOAL HEAR I CNA TIEP HOW I WNAT TO KTHXBYE~" Pretry pathetic when you get ridiculed for typing in English.

            Just my $.02.

Sure I'm a college graduate and I feel I can spell pretty well. But then again my typing skills are another story. Given that I now have very limited time on my hands I don't bother to spell and grammer check what I'm posting. I just post and go.

I am very anal, so I notice mistakes quite readily. I think that it is more of my problem than that of those making the mistakes, though. I need to relax, badly!
There is one possible answer; Americans are lazy! I know, because I am one of them. I always try to find ways to cut corners, or make things more efficient. Most people treat their posts as something that is just being casually tossed out to a general audience of similarly time-starved people. They do not wish to take time to use proper grammar, punctuation, or spelling. Furthermore, it is often much easier, especially when typing, to use abbreviations or characterizations of words, especially for one who lacks the typing skills needed to find the appropriate letters for a word in an acceptable amount of time. Therefore, I am sure that many errors are committed knowingly out of a desire to be fast and efficient. The reader still understands, so nothing is lost.
Always, though, there is much confusion with cognates or similarly spelled words, such as "there," "their," and "they're." Sometimes these mistakes even slip by editors.
Overall, I would say that most Americans write on a middle-school level.
I also notice and am somewhat dismayed that most people I speak with use terrible grammar when speaking. Granted, there are certain cliches and colloquialisms that call for the use of improper grammar, and which sound better in casual conversation than what would be correct grammar. However, most people use words improperly, use double and triple-negatives, and mispronounce things egregiously. Some things have become so ingrained that incorrect forms seem appropriate to most people, such as "not hardly" instead of simply "hardly," or "I could care less," instead of "I couldn't care less." The worse infraction as far as frequency has has to be the mispronunciation of the word "probably." Most people leave out the second syllable, pronouncing it as "probly," or "proby," or other permutations.
Even the highly intelligent are often prone to mistakes. For example, I once was in attendance of a lecture by a repected physiological researcher and noticed that she could not correctly pronounce the word "ask."
Actually, many of those of high intelligence have somewhat poor writing skills and grammar. This is because they are often monomaniacs, and devote much of their intellect to other areas.
In any case, grammar is just an agreement. Shifts away from traditional grammar and spelling aren't bad things. However, it does seem that many are loosing the ability to communicate well.
One funny thing that I have noticed is that my mother, who was born and raised in Germany, possesses a better grasp of English than many Americans do.
Well, I have gone on far too long; an unfortunate byproduct of years spent milking term papers for more content.
Mistakes abound! It is a part of life.
