ATS-85 Magazine Feed system vs. AGD Warp Feed... how does it work?

    ATS AT-85 Info:

I was wondering how this belt feeding system works.

What are the similarities and differences between this and the WARP?

How fast can this system load? (~12bps?)

    Does it jam?

    Does it skip?

    Does it crush balls?

Could this system be modified and improved to bring it to tourny level?

    Thanks for your time:)

NOTE: I'm a big fan of all things inovative and different... whether they really make a difference or not. I respect companies like AGD and Tippmann for always tinkering and coming up with NEW and COOL and DIFFERENT designs.

I realize that this gun looks cool and realistic...

...but my main interest is in HOW the feed system works.

Does anyone out these own one of these things or knows how it force feeds the balls?

      Thanks

I had read on another forum a while back that these weren't allowed to be used because they were full auto only? I Think they were only for military/police training and such? It's a nice idea and I'd love to see it adapted for other paintmarkers.

AT guns were originally banned from tourney use because they gave the user an unfair advantage against his opponent(reduced profile). Since the system couldn't be adapted to any other paintball gun. It was banned. However since the advent of the Warpfeed. These guns are now permitted to be used in most tournaments. There is a Full-Auto lock so the gun is semi only if need be.

The AT 10 AT85 are select fire markers, semi/auto. The paint is fed by a chain drive system which is very sensitive to stripping the gears, but rebuild kits are available for it.

the feed system is an indexed feed system, when the bolt of marker goes back, it catches on the chain of the feed system and cycles the next round up. this happens fast enough so that the links appear not to move.

the feed system will feed as fast as the loader will allow for the auxilary loader clip. if you try and cycle the marker faster than the clip can feed, the pins will bend and either pop the ball into the feeding chain, or skip past it.

with the standard feed clip, you have a couple paralell feed paths to feed the chain, so the potential rof is increased.

but if the feed chain skips a shot, there is no way for the feed system to make up for it unless it is the next one to be fed in the breech and you manually cycle the feed system.
As society and the problems that face it become more and more complex and machines become more and more intelligent, people will let machines make more of their decisions for them, simply because machine-made decisions will bring better results than man-made ones. Eventually a stage may be reached at which the decisions necessary to keep the system running will be so complex that human beings will be incapable of making them intelligently. At that stage the machines will be in effective control. People won't be able to just turn the machines off, because they will be so dependent on them that turning them off would amount to suicide

sometimes I just freaking hate people. which means the next day I will love them for the sake of balance, but right now I will just concentrate on the hating. Hate hate hate. Blaaaarg! ;)

The operation of the magazine system in the AT series of guns is pretty cool, but was fragile for a good while after it came out. I understand it's been beefed up, but there are certain sequences of operation that you have to follow to avoid failures. Basically, the clip has a chain feed system that uses "pins" to pull balls up a feed channel. At the top of the clip, the ball is pushed through a one-way detent and chambered (it's a closed-bolt gun). The chain is driven by a kind of flat-sprockety thing linked to the firing mechanism. There's timing issues as well as durability (pins can get bent, for example), but when it's on, it's ON. Rate of fire is more a function of the gun's internal reg and mechanism but I think 16bps could be achieved.

The AT-85R was one of the most dead-on shooting guns I ever fired...I don't know if it was me or the gun or what, but using its sights (with four different rear sight profiles for different ranges), I consistently hit single, aimed shots on a plate-sized target at 100 feet. You can't shortstroke it, either, and the trigger was pretty sweet. If money were no object, I'd have one of these babies with a nice Max-Flow air system. I always thought the company should have made a direct-feed semi-only gun using the AT's internals. It would have given AGD and Palmer's a real headache if it was priced in the $300-$400 range.

Yes, the AT-85 can be a bit finicky...I have one in my basement collecting dust.

The chaindrive feed is "timed" to feed one ball per cycle of the marker. This differs from the warp that just puts pressure on the stack of balls. There is no pressure on the balls...they are actually spaced out as they are fed into the marker (you can see it in the pic).

If the hopper can't keep up with the rate of fire...no problem, you just shoot blanks until it catches up.

Sometimes, the feed will jam. In which case you have to drop the clip out (just a bit) hit a "reset" button that recocks everything and then slam the clip back in. It can be a tough thing to do while under fire.

I believe that ATS suggests maintenance for the gun once every 500 shots. Now I don't know about you, but that's a little too often for my game. I used to be really intent on getting one of those but eventually lost interest.

Is that what you believe or is that what you read?

That type of frequent maintenance would suck for sure... you gotta link to that 500 shots reference?

The online owner's manual lists a maintenance schedule of every month or every 5000 rounds for certain parts of the ATS markers. Other parts require maintenance less frequently. Here is the URL to the .pdf document:
