It's a shame. Hopefully people pay more attention to the dangers of air pressure now.

I personally know that I've blown macroline (with fitting) at around 1300 PSI, I've had fill hoses slip off the nipple, I've accidentally turned the tank on and had macroline whip around, etc, etc. All it takes is a small accident and bad luck, and stuff like this can happen.

I think paintball players have become casual and complacent with dealing with high pressures that should be treated with more respect than we give them.

        From the local paper,

In the paper, it sounds like equipment failure.

          man thats terrible.

compressed air has always made me edgy and this makes me even more safery-concious. this is a tragedy but i hope that from this people will gain a greater sense of caution.

my condolances and thoughts are with the family.

It's a real shame. The guy was a firefighter.

Filling my 4500psi tank always scares me. Since I run remote, I try to give it to the fill guy and take a few steps back.

Bofh, I find it odd that the article you posted doesn't mention that it was a paintball compressed air tank that he was filling...

                      Wes,
It was Paintball USA. Rick was doing the filling that day. He came into the shop a couple of days later and was still shaken up over it.

It said that he was using new equipment to fill.

I wonder if the fittngs used were just plated brass or not rated high enough.

I am one of the head refs at Paintball USA and was about 6 feet away when the tank went off.

Brad, if you think Rick was shaken up days later you should have seen his eyes when I figured out that the rust colored crush mark on the bottle matched up with the rusty smudge on the fill station right in front of where his chest was.

BTW, the bottle (114 ci) went far enough that it took us about an hour to find it.
