Can a classic mag ever be a tourny gun?

I recently played a tourny and got a bit miffed by my competition. It seems that everybody had dropped their cockers for angels! Also, the impulses that had once been "the gun to have" in my area, have also been discarded for even faster markers.

I marched onto the field with my classic valve mag.... It has inteliframe, and a SUPER soft LX (Thanks Havoc!), and is 100% chrome. I got a lot of players asking me what on earth it was! (mags are rare where I am, but nice mags are unheard of) I went sliding into bunkers and stayed as tight as I could, but I always got taken down on the way to my second or third bunker!

Now, I know that about 3,000 post whoring folks are going to say, "It's all about the player, not the gun", but the fact is, that it's hard to play in a game where you're entirely outgunned! I couldn't keep player's heads down, and I certainly couldn't get through these boy's streams of paint! My back player had a vert feed cocker, nothing fancy, and we hadn't EVER player together before, so it seemed he was fairly useless.

I HAVE TO RUN CO2 BECAUSE THE FIELD THAT I PLAY AT 99% OF THE TIME DOES NOT FILL HPA. I CANNOT GET A RETRO OR EMAG! IF YOU HAVE ANY BRAINS IN YOUR HEAD, DON'T TELL ME TO UPGRADE TO A MARKER THAT REQUIRES HPA TO RUN!!!

Here's my question: Can a classic mag be used in today's tournys? I consider myself a decent player, but I felt utterly powerless against those high volume markers!

Sounds like you were moving too much, not playing smart enough..... And like shartley pointed out, I think you were just playing better players. It happens unfortunately :)

you can keep most people from coming out with merely 5bps...the fact that their angels could do 12-14 is well...irrelevant

it IS the player...NOT the gun...i could take a TALON and go play against the newbies at my field...id win 9/10 games against them

then again, i could give one my Emag and i take his rental, and ID win!

Could it be that you and the back man didn't work on communication at all? Not to sound like a broken record but communication is key. You have to be vocal at all times.
Sorry you got taken out and felt like you were "outgunned".

              You mag

Here is an idea for you, If you feel that your mag is not putting out paint fast enough, why dont you look at getting a Hyper frame. I run one on my mag "Yoshi" and it rocks!!!, I have no problem going up against angles impulse's cockers ....
I also work well with my fellow team mates, Talk Talk Talk.

              Just my 10 cents

All good thoughts. I think it may have suprised me to see everybody show up with so much better gear than I'd seen in the past. I proabably just let myselt get intimidated.

The lack of communication issue probably cause a lot of my movement problems too. I guess you pinpointed a lot of good things. :)

One thing that really did disturb me, though, was my lack of ability to keep men down. You say that 8bps should put men under as well as 12, but it seemed that those extra balls gave a big edge! I always try to stay up as long as possible; I'm almost risky in that respect. Every time I ducked in, it was because I needed to. When I got back up and started pushing my man down to move, I could never get enough paint there fast enough before he could get to me again!

This all sounds like an issue with my playing ability, and that may be true, but what am I doing wrong?

I can hit 13 very easily on my imp, but that's besides the point. What position do you play? Snap shoot more, it's my saving grace. Nothing kills a cocky back player faster than a well placed snap shot.

Well if your playing at a field that doesn't have HPA how is the competition running there angels. Nevermind that, mags don't have run HPA to be good they run quite well on Co2.

My back player had a vert feed cocker, nothing fancy, and we hadn't EVER player together before, so it seemed he was fairly useless.
Well if your a newly formed team maybe you should practice a little more, you just can't expect to go to your first tournament with a newly formed team and place first.

If your worried about fire power why don't you look into a electro trigger for your Mag such as the one made by centerflag that will give you a boost in your trigger speed.

You really weren't all that specific about the tournament did you enter the correct level for your and your team?

Have you ever played tournaments at that same field you lost at ? Is is possible that some of the competition may have played in the wrong level. Alot of teams will enter a tournament at a level below what they usually play at just to score prizes, no it's not sportsman like but it does happen.

Snapshooting is of the devil I try, but it's more fun to hang out and watch the paint come towards you :) Beleive it or not, it works for me! I can get out of the way with just enough time to spare. My proablem come when I actually leave my bunker and just can't get there without being nailed. I play front. Generally I get thrown on the left, but anywhere works.

This is a small tourny...nothing fancy! If guys were entering into the wrong divisions, they must be pretty pretty sad

The field I play at does not have HPA...the tourny did have HPA.

Ok...here's a question, does CO2 support the fire power of a hyperframe? I always assumed not. I mean, I might as well drop my classic valve into an emag! Yes, I've considered that....I'm sad.....I'm a sad, sad CO2 user

                              Back Player

You probably answered your own question. Even though it seems like a lazy position having a good back player even in rec ball is pretty important. I've been in paintball long enough to have moved from being a front player to mid to back. So I can tell you the difference. From the way you talk it sounds like the back player was playing his own game and not supporting his team mates. Alot do this. However, if you look at someone like Bob Long who is probably the greates back player of them all you'll notice that he doesn't move often and when he does it is to get a better angle on someone stopping the forward movement of his team mates. The other thing you'll notice is he SCREAMS a continual stream of information to his players. A good back player looks for new angles or openings while providing cover for players who are pinned down. He also should be telling you where and when to go if at all possible. Sounds like the guy behind that cocker wasn't doing his job. Generally a front player won't go through much paint. My wife who is a front player (against my recommendations mind you) may go through a hopper at most. She does have an EMAG with a warp feed so she could lay down probably more paint than those Angels you're talking about but that isn't her job as a front player. Laying down that much paint is my job (especially when it is your wife you are covering). I have gone through 1000 rounds in a speedball game that lasted 4 minutes only because I didn't have 2000 to go through. Once again that's my job. I suspect that if you had a descent back player you wouldn't be getting marked out as often. Hold your head proudly as an Automag user and dump the lousy back player!

                              Regards!
