My parents are the ones that usually freak out on me. I've tried it before but it doesn't work...

I'm thinking of writing a book about stuff like this:

Children are from Mars, Parents are from Uranus

        Sorry. Couldn't resist that.

Putting my pschyo-therapist hat on for a minute, I found with my parents that they went against my ideas for one of two reasons:

        1) They had a fear about it that they didn't vocalise. eg. They LOVED that I played the violin ( which I hated), but HATED that I played electric guitar ( which I loved.) In many ways they made sure I didn't join a band and try to make a go of it. Looking back now I know that their fear was that if I did make it I would have access to stuff that scared them - drugs, sex, drink... but they never told me that, and perhaps never even told themselves. If I'd know that this was the issue I could have dealt with it and made things move forward.

        2) They had stuff going on in their lives ( work and all that ) that they felt was out of their control - and that made them feel powerless. As an outlet for this powerlessness they controlled everything around them that they found that they COULD control, which included me. This is very common. I was fortunate in that my parents had a very strong sense of "fairness" so when they did this it wasn't really intentional, but it's pretty common for parents who have very little regard for themselves to get stuck in a rut of treating themselves destructively ( like becoming fat and lazy ) and trying to drag the fun out anyone else around them too.

        Sucks.

Sorry, won't work. I've given them the apg article that covered all of this and more and they still turned it down. Not to mention the word paintball is in the first sentence of the article...
