Simply put, if you cannot afford to have a safe building, then you cannot afford that building. It seems that you need to move back into your old building, because without fire sprinklers, you're putting ALL of the players and staff in a potential risk.

Yeah, it's a great dream, but the inspector is 100% right here. Instead of putting blame on the inspector, saddle up and bite the bullet. Either get the sprinkler system, or don't move at all.

    Safety ALWAYS takes precedent.

Go to your local home depot and buy a skid of 1" black pipe, some hangers, and some sprinkler heads. Do it your self and have a local plumber with a license hook it up to the main water hit and sign off on the inspection. You could probably do this yourself for less than a few thousand. Its really easy to hang pipe and screw it together with pipe wrenches.

Plus, as it's not an office building etc, you don't need it to look fancy.

Rent a scissor lift (if necessary, and if you can fit it). It will make hanging the pipe easier.

Check with local ordinances, in some states, if the building is of a certain age, sprinklers are grandfathered out. You won't have to have sprinklers. Again check local ordinances.

Best of luck to you guys.

I don't get this thing about safety. The building they were in was 10,000 ft^2 and had no sprinklers. The new building is 19,000 ft^2 and has no sprinklers. Wouldn't the bigger building be less crouded and thus be safer? Also if you have ever been to a club that is packed, it will have more people than the indoor field and be like 1/8 the size. What I am getting at is that the new building should be safer, because of the size difference, unless it is built like timber.

well, if you can't get around putting in the sprinklers, what about taking on a business partner that could fund that install, and then offer them a profitable buyout to make it worth their while? If the town council is all for this, there's probably plenty of people willing to pitch in. Have fund raisers, do what it takes, but don't give up because of a dumb thing like that. Have a vision, and share it, people will follow a person with a vision!

Not really. A variance is just that, a request to be excluded from a certain local code or ordinence. They can reqe=uested for many reasons, in your case finanacial. If you can show that that the business can not open with the sprinklers, it will be up to the board you meet with to decide how bad they want your business.

I am very suprised to hear them demand you retrofit and existing building. Normally as was posted before, you should be grandfathered.

                      Good Luck!

Also, while I like your idea Tuna, It would not be that simple. I assume it gets quite cold up their in Wisconsin, so with a sprinkler system, you would need to heat the building at all times to prevent it from freezing and bursting again adding to ingoing operating costs.

If the building does not have sprinklers now, how is it unsafe? Doesn't sound like it burned down before does it?
