I think its a GREAT Idea.
My biggest problem with the larger team games is theres sooo much paint flying nobody really moves. Takes all the athleticism out of the game.
As it is now, my Grandma could play back, and she's been dead for years.

I think with some creativity 1v1 & 2v2's could really put the excitement back into the game.

Time limits, ammo limits & points for quick kills & other goal oriented incentives (creativity!) would really make it worth playing AND watching.

      btw- Great Question!

I think it would push things toward more of a mainstream point. You'd be able to offer better prizes, and thus you'd develope a crowd of top players that are drawn to prizes. There is also the point of being able to be called "the" best. No sharing the crown.

Sponsorships would be GREAT for single players. Think of the advertising you could do when you're only worrying about sponsoring 4 or 5 TOP players instead of 40 guys...

As far as the playability, it would be up to the players to make it work. No, you couldn't end up with big drawn out shootouts... that would kill it. It'd become like the UFC, where instead of fights things just boiled down to wrestling matches. Maybe have panalties for being stationary for more than 30seconds? Or just put the time limit on the games at like 3 minutes. Bonuses for sub 30 second eliminations.

I think it'd fly. I think we need faces for the sport. And what we've got doesn't cut it IMHO. Heck, I don't EVER watch soccer, but even I know who Beckham is. Same thing with skateboarding, where would it be without tony hawk? There needs to be some sort of player rankings I think... push it out to where there are guys that everyone recognizes going for it every month. Teams are GREAT for playing, but I think it's too cumbersome for TV. Can't be filmed easy enough, and it's hard to translate. I think if we had 1v1 on tv for a while, that would open it up for team ball later, when people realize what they are watching.

[edit]also forgot, how many of us can't find enough people to regularly get a team to tournies? Think of it, that would be a thing of the past. You wouldn't have to worry about getting the other guys up for it... it's all on you. No problem if no one else is hardcore. Entrance fees are for you only, no problem if the other guys can't pony up the dough.[/edit]

Make it good ol' fashioned 12-gram, rock-and-cock and I'm there. No reason why you couldn't have multiple classes, though.

Best thing I've read on the intarweb in a looong time. Very TV friendly, fun to play, fun to watch, allows for "stars" to develop, and even gives the chicks and fat guys a shot.

i think that a 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 sideshow to the x-ball tourney would be cool... but make the field small, and the bunkers progressively closer, and you get 30 pb in the hopper to start, at the second bunker you get a pod of 30 more and at the 3rd bunker you get another 30... with time bonuses or restrictions it could be a great sideshow for the attending public to compete in, attempt, or just watch.

1 on 1 across the board would destroy this TEAM sport.

...More Great Ideas! Keep 'em comming- I'm writin 'em all down.

Hey Bolter- The idea is to ADD to the sport. I dont think anybody envisions 1v2 & 2v2's replaceing the rest but adding to them- giving the the players & public more options.
I seriously like the idea of going 1up with another player- manoAmano -make skill & athletacism more important than the marker & how much paint you can throw with it.

I agree that X-ball is the future of paintball, but I feel there is room for 1v1 or 2v2. As was said earlier 1v1 & 2v2 would be perfect for the X Games. Think about it you could promote X-ball with these matches. It would also as said before give faces to paintball. There is no way 1v1/2v2 could replace large team paintball. It could spread the word about our sport though. And with time and paint limits the players could be forced to make it interesting. I think this is a grand scheme and could be a great coup for paintball. That's just my opinion

Toss in automatic moving bunkers! Some that move left and right 10 feet at regular intervals, like every 15 seconds, and a few that move forward and back about 10 feet regularly as well.

That will keep 'em moving, not being able to hunker down in one bunker! Must time those moves and runs, otherwise the bunker will move away from ya!

I'm also thinking bunkers that inflate and deflate at regular intervals too!

ok, sorry my bad, i remembered the original post wrong. I thought you were saying oneonone instead of. They used to do oneonone and twoontwo at Campaign Cup (Millenium event). It was good as a sort of showcase side event, where the individual could really show off.

I've played with moving bunkers (Ryan forgot to throw stakes in a can on a windy day) and believe me, it's not as cool as it might sound.
