Why didn't 'mags get a reputation for having more range?

I've read about how people used to think that 'cockers and shockers had longer range than other guns due to the closed bolt firing, but it was actually just what it appeared be, as each shot kept going the same distance due to excellent consistancy. 'mags were/are just as consistant as those other two, so why wouldn't they have earned that rep?

    Cuz they're not closed bolt.

Myths come about because... um... misconception?

The legend transferred over from actual firearms.

I'm no engineer, but apparently closed-bolted firearms DO fire flatter and longer trajectories. Also, rifled gun barrels DO make a difference, while rifled paintball barrels don't.

Don't take my word for it though.

Your correct about the rifled part. A kentucky rifle, used in the Rev. war, was extremely accurate compared to the standard muskets. Since it was rifled the ball would spin, and the spin was effective because metal is a solid. Rifling doesnt work with paintballs because the fill would just move around while the shell spins sending it out of control.

I have also heard that a closed bolt gun shoots farther and flatter than open bolts. I am pretty sure this one is also true.

By closed bolt gun you probably mean Bolt Action rifles. They are more acurate and have some more range than semi-auto rifles, because you don't waste gas moving the mechanism. And acuracy comes from the fact that you dont slam the mechanism forward before firing in a bolt action, the breach is closed when you fire.

So in fact the paintball myth seems to stem from this basic gun facts.

Meh, from my own personal experience, my classic valve was never as consistent as the majority of aftermarket inline regulators that I've used. I think once the precedent of good consistent 'cocker regs was set it was tough for the mag valve to catch up in reputation. And we all know aftermarket gizmos drive the hype market!

Just so you know, there is no Semi auto "blow forward" firearms.. all of them has a closed breech when they fire. A bolt operation is a locked operation, like a pump.. and a semi-auto works just like a cocker does, but most use either burning gasses fron the area behind the bullet to release the bolt, or they use the recoil.. Gas is more accurate than recoil, and bolt/pump is more accurate than either of the above (all else being the same)

actually the fire arms knowledge may have helped to give people a reason. But the truth is very few if any mags ever shot quite as nice as a tuned cocker. The kick is different and that makes the gun harder to aim. In addition many people had crap after market items. And last but most important one thing i always felt hurt the mag is the trigger. You cna change the velocity of yuou mag by pulling the trigger different. Try it soemtime. THe people who shoot mags well (sharp, fast, snapping trigger pull) Will usually get more consistent results. people who use doubel trigger 45s liek the old bench marks which were very popular could get horible results.

If I recall correctly the German Fallschirmjager Gewehr 42 (WW2 stuff) was the first to sport both open bolt full-automatic firing and closed bolt semi-automatic firing modes.

Guess what? The closed bolt mode is more accurate but creates more heat.

Because AGD wouldn't lie to its customers in advertising and WGP would.
