Why didn't 'mags get a reputation for having more range?

A closed bolt firearm will not, under any circumstance, shoot farther, all things being equal. However, closed bolt firearms are generally more accurate than an open bolt gun, simply because with a closed bolt, the bolt is at rest at the instant the round is fired. Gas operated semi auto's can have the same accuracy as a bolt-action gun. Using the same ammunition, bullets fired from a closed or open bolt gun would have the same flight characteristics (trajectory, range), although the gun may move a little bit and cause innacuracy.
Now, back to paintball. I think the reason that Cockers and other closed bolt markers were considered more accurate was the fact that they are cloed bolt. In a Cocker, a loaded ball is pushed past the ball detent, so there is nothing to hold back the ball except a proper sized barrel. We all know that paint-to-barrel match is crucial for accuracy. Cocker owners have to use the proper barrel bore size to make sure that the ball stays in the breech. This also means that their guns are more accurate.

a couple months ago I asked this sorta question...

on PBN's cocker forum (mechanical section) and 90% of the respondants (it was a poll) agreed they don't have more range or accuracy. Of course, they might have just walked off a field someplace after being shot dead center of the lense by a mag owner several times over the course of a day... but that's not important evidence is it?

            OY VEY

            oy yoy yoy yoy yoy!

            This old thread again!?

            I offer some personal perspective:

            1. implying that WGP 'lied' about their gun's performance is like saying the Bible lies because it has 2+ accounts of Genesis in it (bad analogy, and no, I don't want to talk about that here)

            2. MY A.I.R. valve 'mag is so hellaciously consistent that its unbelievable. No aftermarket parts, one hole drilled to line up inlet and outlet ports, level 10, nothing else done, straight from the factory. If you are where I am when I have it with me, you are welcome to fire it over the chrono and witness for yourself a virtually uninterrupted string of shots at 298: 298, 298, 298, 298, 298, 300, 298, 297, 298, 298, 298......get the picture?

            3. My 'mag has an 'old' benchmark double trigger on it. I guess its performance is due to the fact that I know how to pull a trigger, regardless of the frame...

            4. I was fortunate enough to have attended NPPL Chicago 97, where the attending teams were split 50/50 between 'cockers and 'mags. (My team had 50/50 cockers and mags all by itself.) Since this open bolt/closed bolt debate was raging at the time, I conducted a series of informal observations and polls throughout the event, and I found that no one felt out-gunned (range) and winning did not favor one gun over the other (accuracy). How did I do this? I was the one collecting NPPL stats at the time, so I had the figures handy. Yes, the two guns have different trajectories, but they both put the ball on target at the same range.

Yes, the two guns have different trajectories, but they both put the ball on target at the same range.

I think everyone is trying to establish that the markers do not have different trajectories.
