I know n00b and newbie came from online gaming and stuff but they are used a lot in paintball. Has anyone ever said one of these at school/anywhere else to your none paintball friends and just got blank stares?

Newb.
I hate that term with a passion, especially when people on the paintball field call little kids newbs, newbie, n00b whatever. I mean seriously, lets think about it, they just started playing and its quite obvious. Do we really need a term that brings them down just because they started later than you or its their first time playing? You sir, whoever you are, just made a complete idiot our of youself. Remember you were a "newb" at some point too. Learn some humility, and please learn to refrain from spouting crap from your mouth ever again.
Here is an example:
Somebody my age constantly comes up to me and says "Dude, look at those newbs." Everytime he does it I just want to lay him out with my fist. First off, I don't even like this kid, but I tolerate him regardless of his extreme annoying attitude. Second, he sucks. I mean he just plays awful. He shoots his custom intimidator from the hip because he watched to many paintball videos. Also, he tries to play that role of tournament player with the "Im better than you" attitude at the field and staging area. He has all this expensive gear his parents bought him and has the audacity to say "that kid there is such a newb."? One day Im gonna snap and just say, "Look, who is the newb who can't play worth crap even for playing for 3 years and now for having a kick butt gun which can't hit a broad side of a barn in your hands, doesn't move even when its 5v2 and your team is wrapping up the game, just stays back and lays paint, and just got his butt handed to him by a kid with a entry level marker. If your gonna fill that position of being a bad mofo, at least have SOME skill to back it up, but even then, you will be looked at as crap. Whos the newb?"
And then there are the little kids who think they are hotter than crap on a stick with gear paid for by their mommies and daddies. Always saying "my gun is better than your gun" or "you suck you newb" JUST because they have less stuff than the others. I choose to play with people with more intelligence and can look past their obscure point of view that don't care what gun you have, or gear, you are judged by your playing and character.
Sorry for the rant, I just never have used the term newb and never will, and if you ever use it in my presence in a non-joking manner, I will punch you, only because you deserve it.

I know what it means and notice that I was going for the degrading part of newb used in phrases like "GOD your such a n00b!". I should of said in my ending statement, "If you ever use it in front of me in a degrading, non-joking manner I will drop kick you in the head." My bad.

Oh ok, so they are pronounced the same, yet have different meanings...
Still a stupid term IMO. Usually I call new people, new and arrogant, pompous idiots, well just say the mods won't let me type it
