Scrumpy, yes, the ground (black wire) should not be connected to the switch at all, the switch controlls power on/off this could possibly be what is causing the battery to heat up... make the ground (black) one long connection directly to the fan, the power (red) is where the switch comes into play, connect the end from the 9v to one of the outside prongs, and the end from the fan to the middle prong... the way you have it is most likely what is causing the problem and is also bad on the switch and fan motor as well, also drains battery like crazy even when the switch is off and nothing is running...AclowN
