Bang for the Buck goes to the Phantom, especially for 12 gram use. Phantoms have small air volumes to fill (like all Nelsons) Are are light to the extreme. So untill CCM goes stock-class the Phantom is king. Also, with a little bit of polishing the Phantom will be just as smooth as any carter I have shot. Carter has a good quality feel of coarse.
I respect Tyger's opinion, but unlike Semi's, and particularly electro's, the human-to-machine interface is so high that you can make a "which is best" determination. The electro's are so homogenized for speed that the differences are not really apparent, or important.
    Brent.
I was thinking that the construction of the marker would be importantand design of a pump would be critical due to the "human to machine" inerface as well. Lke I stated before, I have used a phantom and really had fun with it. Short stroked and double fed the heck out of the thing, but that's my issue not the marker.

I hear so many good things about the CCM's that I want to come out to the next pump day in Sacto and try one before I drop the cash on one.

To all: Thanks for your input!

Personally, I like Nelson style pumps. Some examples of these would be the CCI Phantom, The oldschool PMI Trracer, and the ACI Maverick. I picked up a used Trracer a while back and (aside from the noise) am very happy with it. It's a tad loud for a pump, but I think that's more to do with the barely-ported barrel and my spring setup.

Nelson style guns are also terribly easy to service. In fact, I can completely tear down my Trracer (Well, aside from removing the bottomline, which you essentially never need to do anyway) without a single tool.

I'd have to say Illusion, Phantom or Sterling. I would like to try the Chipley though.

          Agreed.

Post pictures of your beast Brent!!

I have a Sterling right now, and I wan't to build a CCM based Sniper. Both are stacked tube guns. I like the heft, actually. Some may prefer the smaller size of phantom-style single tube guns.

          I'd recomend shooting both styles.
God....I guess I was probably returning videotapes.

I have a Phantom, but I have always loved Carters even though I have never shot one. Hopefully one day I will own one. But its all personal preference, which ever one you like the best is the "Best Pump on the Planet"

I guess I should have used a better title. Best is a subjective term. I was thinking what markers you use and what you like and why kind of thing....oh well good info anyway.

Where can you get pump kits for Mags and what do they look like? Does it matter what kind of valve ect that you have?

The CCM J5 looks like a cool idea. You can get the pump, build a mech and electric marker all with one upper. (At least I think you can)

Not trying to take over the thread or anything, but I noticed nobody mentioned Palmers pumps. Why? I ask because I am interested in buying a Super Stocker. thanks

I really prefer Nelson based pumps, especially the Phantom, over the Sheridans, for many reasons, but most are quite subjective and related to personal preference.

The CCM quality is very high, and you get a great bang for your bucks.

Sterlings are nice if you can get a hold of one, but lack pretty much ANY aftermarket options unless you go custom.

                      Ok, umm, I'll rephrase.

The best pump is the one you're most comfortable with, not the one that's "bench-tested best". I'm trying to make the point that you can get opinions, but in the end it's what's most comfortable to you. I just happen to find most pumps comfortable, even if the Sterling felt a little awkward in my hands I still got people with it.

                              1) Anything Carter. Best gun I ever owned. pump or semi. Not really sure why I ever sold it. Very smooth, reliable and accurate.

                              2) Phantoms. Very light, smooth, good autotrigger if you want the speed. And very dependable.

                              3) Action Markers Illusion. Little heavier than the phantom. Nice smooth pump action. No auto trigger. But can easily be set up for either stock class, or Gravity feed. Also easily switched from 12g use to CA use. Takes Cocker thread barrels and angel thread feed necks.

                              4) Palmers. Only got to test shoot one and loved it. Heavy guns. But the brass barrel is worth the extra weight. Not much of an upgrade path for them, but then again you don't need to upgrade them. Eventually I'm looking at getting a Nasty Houndstooth built by them.

                              5) The old PMI guns. PMI-1 and PGP's. Started out on these guns and still love them. Very accurate. Very Heavy.

Like many have said, I would suggest shooting a lot of different types to find one that fits your style.

If you are interested in just jumping in, I would suggest buying an ACI Maverick or PMI Traccer. They are nelson based pump guns with smooth pump strokes. They can be found used for $40-$50. The only problem is that the Mav barrel is sort of small bore, so field paint can be a problem (barrel breaks). But overall a great "first pump gun".
