Stressing under Test vs. Testing under Stress

The purpose of stress testing a new server is to try and gauge capacity of the server. Obviously, they don't want to underestimate and have to buy new servers every 6 months. Therefore by getting a large portion of the user base to push the server, you can kinda see how many total users the system would hold and gauge a growth pattern. # Users/day doing xxx # of page reads, etc. etc. puts the server at this load pattern of yy%, so given our growth of x # users per day, adding zzz # of page reads, this server will last for xxx months. :)

I don't know if you noticed the big slow down on the server when they announced the design contest winner and had the contests and the chat. That high amount of activity is kinda what they are looking to do again. My Guess is that Buying the new server and bandwidth was done to prevent that type of slowdown. Now they just want to see if they fixed the problem.

AGD: Here is a neat thing that you might want to try during your stress test: Have everyone start at a given time, then do a SEARCH and then search for all their own posts, and then post back in the thread their results. Then have them go back a second time and search for a term like "EMAG", and come back and post the results. This would stress test your database and indexing stuff.

AGD: On the what is the start time: why don't you keep it simple and just use the system clock on this webserver. It displays a current time at the bottom of the HOME page. Then everyone has a place they know they can look and see exactly what time it is. LOL, I guess this assumes that the time is correct, but it would be the standard time in AO Land anyway...
