Should we feel bad or what? Tourney results

Well me and 3 of my friends played our first ever tourney this saturday. Naturally we played in the "beginners" catagory. Now, we have all been playing for a little less then a year but have only been playing speedball for less than two months. We are all about the same age and it seems we got into the sport a bit later then most (ages range from 23 - 26). Any way we played twelve games and won every single one. (maxed points every game) We only had 3 deaths all day and no more then one of our players ever went out in a single game.

I dont think age was a factor but we were playing what seemed like 12-17 year olds. Please keep in mind we all were using mechanical mags. So the teams with electros may have had that advantage (or not, no need to beat a dead horse).

So heres the deal should we take advantage of our "beginners" status and play all our remaining first years tourneys in beginners for the experience or immediately bump up to novice. I personnaly felt bad for all the kids we slaughtered. I also felt a bit weird being so old in what seemed to be a 12-16 age group

    What should we do?

i'd say play a couple more, and if the slaughter continues, bump up level. I mean, you could have just playing good that day, or the competition sucked. And it will give a little more time to learn to work together before you take on the more "advanced" players

play another few beginners. get your team name out and stuff. get confident at that level instead of jumping ahead. you could have just gotten lucky. after that, jump up to rookie, repeat the process.

        thats pretty neat :)

            age smage

I dont think age has a ton to do with it either. I seem to remember playing a Toledo indoor tournament and just getting slaughters by a bunch of 12-13 year olds!! they were all little pint sized guys and they could shoot out the lower corner of the inflatable bunkers!!!

Stay in that division, make sure it wasn't a fluke and then go up if its too easy for you. I'm sure you will run into peopel who have played advanced level tournaments that are playing on novice teams just to stomp people along the way. You can teach thema lesson if you run into them.

hehehe my first tourny we won ONE game all day. It was horrible. We got jobbed by the refs on two of the games, but it was ugly.

I agree with the rest of the advice, play another tourny or two, then see about bumping up. Make sure that you're playing as a team, and not just overwhelming them on an individual level. The better the competition is the more important playing as a team is.

My first tourney, we also won 1 game all day. We were new and the other teams were better. If you start to win all the time then you'll need to play better teams.

nothing like those 5 man teams sandbagging when they really should bump up to 7man.

no offense, but as long as you call them "deaths" i think your right where you belong

                    j/k

but you want to know the reason you won? these teenagers who are playing just as long as you are still scared ^$#&less. You guy arent. So, when i comes to having to move on the offensive vs. sitting still and hope everything works out, you can guess which one wins games.

                    congrats btw!

dunno bout you guys, but its stupid trying to seriously play most touny's round me. there is always one "friend of naughty dogs" team or some other professional team that plays because they know the field owner. They can afford to have 100 boxes of paint in a small 5 man because its free to them, and are way beyond the scope of the current bracket.

In our local tourneys if you win at the beginner/ intermediate level you have gained enough street cred to bump up into the next level. I'd say bump. Dont feel bad you underestimated your skill level. But know that you will have a target on your chest next time. even when you bump up.

Are prizes involved? Do they help pay your way in the tournament series?

In all seriousness, why move up till you have to? Use the time allowed at the lower level to hone your skills.

If there's no financial or experience value to staying in the lower level, by all means move up as soon as you want.

But remember, you can often move up but you can usually NEVER move back down.

playing teams worse than you doesnt help your skill much.

but then again, getting laned every game off the break doesnt help your skill either.

id say try to practice with some of the teams in a higher division, and make the choice yourself. if you can hold your own against them, move up. if you do horribly against them, stay where you are.
