    Just an observation

Has anyone else noticed that when companies advertise their low end markers (whether or not they choose to label them as "tournament grade"), they are often being shot by players with otherwise top-of-the-line gear?

Generally, those who buy cheap markers buy cheap equipment as well. The typical player, if he has $300 to spend, will spend minimal amounts on his mask and clothing and usually put the majority toward the gun. Players shooting Brass Eagle guns don't normally wear $80 goggles, $45 jerseys and $120 pants.

You don't really see this outside of paintball...I mean, when was the last time you saw a mobile home lot with an advertisement featuring a Maserati parked in front of a double-wide?

Ummm.... once uppon a time this wasn't so much the case. Actually, the only company that I was aware of doing this was Tippmann, though admittedly I am a bit cut-off from the rest of the world.

Kingman, so far as I know, only shows their guns in studio settings, similarly with PMI and several other Spyder clone guns. If the company does show a player wearing soft goods, I'm used to seeing these players wearing the clothing that the company also makes (Raven, Evil, Smart Parts, DYE).

Perhaps Tippmann's just on the brain because their new guns are fugly M98's and there's a pic of a Tippmann Effect player with one in an ad?

I think that's a premature statement. Although it might be true that new players spend most of their money on the marker, in time, they will also learn to upgrade other equipment such as clothing and protective gear. Not everyone can go out and spent a ton of money on a new sport they may or may not stick with.

I've noticed that. It actually makes me angry. I think that's why so many newbs think they are so pimp sometimes.

Though I do love the Silver Bullet ad, "Bad news travels fast!" I swear they must talking about the gun.

*two posts above me; I remember a JT ad for the Excelorator (or however they butchered the word) where they had a semi-pro guy "using" it in a game.

Also, the Mongoose had one where "World Renoun someone" said "They should've called it the Chainsaw. It's that fast." Or something like that. It's not extremely common, but it's common enough.

Actually at my local woodsball field it is NOT unusual to see younger players decked out in DYE jersey and pants, but shooting a Tippman/Spyder clone. I always assumed it was new players who don't have "upgradeitis" yet and/or are nervous about taking apart their marker and instead dropped the cash to get that instant "look".

Considering the price of new DYE soft goods, that means they spent as much on clothing as their marker.

In the "trailerpark town" near where my parents live, it's considered pretty normal to drive by a trailer (single wide), with a 15x50 foot yard, a new John Deere riding mower to mow that massive patch with (of course you need a good mower to maneuver around the lawn flamingos), and a matched set of new corvettes in the driveway. Sometimes your priority is all about what image you want to portray to what crowd.

Last weekend when I played, there was a kid there with a spyder clone that had a stiffi, halo, and 20oz co2 tank.

Not exactly what you was talking about, but you dont usually see stuff like that on a cheaper marker either.

                  I'd rather have a $100 gun and an $80 mask than a $1000 gun and a $20 mask...

You can't play if you can't see. Just saying.

I lost glasses once while playing and still kept my mask. I beg to differ. I played :) And my vision without glasses is worse than 20/400

It is all about selling the product. Make it look good in the advertisement and sell as many as you can before people buy something else. Change the color call it new and sell some more. People tend to be stupid this way.
