    freak or powerlyte?

do you think i should get the freak or the powerlyte?

i like the way the freak looks but so many people have one and i'm one of those people who like owning different things. the powerlyte is just as accurate as the freak and not as common. what do u guys thinks? i am shooting them on a mag and an ion if that makes a difference.

Get a Freak, all those attorneys s on SP's payroll has got to be expensive.

Seriously, get whatever kit you think looks the best and/or is cheaper all barrel kits pretty much shoot the same.

that is one of the problems the powerlyte is cheaper but isnt as good looking but by theory the locking inserts should make it work better.

As an owner of both, and a guy who runs a paintball league sponsored by both companies, I felt somewhat obliged to answer this with my own opinion. The Freak is a great barrel, let's face it, if it didn't shoot straight the Russians and Dynasty would probably be shooting All American barrels.

As a personal friend of Paul and the people at Powerlyte, I've got to say that the 07 Scepter kit is an amazing barrel. The inserts and front are tapered, and they lock together as you thread the barrel pieces together, making for a perfect alignment every time and preventing your insert from moving around while you shoot. Powerlyte barrels have always shot darts for me. They're a small company working hard in paintball and they've got some brilliant ideas, that happens to be one of them. It's light, inexpensive and shoots amazing. It won't be quite as quiet as the Freak, though, as it has less porting. For the price the Scepter is a tough barrel to beat.

I have shot the Freak system on some other people's markers. They had problems with wearing of the interior finish on the inserts, which I have been told is a problem with the aluminum Freak inserts (it could be a problem with any aluminum insert - the stainless steel could avoid this). My experience with a Freak is that they do have a problem shooting through breaks.

What I purchased and have found to work very well is a 2007 Powerlyte Scepter with 5 inserts. I have been using one for about a month now and it has worked great. Put about 3000 paintballs through it on my RT Pro and no breaks, shoots nice and straight. Since I have not had any breaks, I cannot comment on their ability to clean up after one.

The Scepter is loud, I would say louder than the Dye Ultralite I was using on the marker. My efficiency with the RT Pro has been good. I have been getting about 1100 shots from a 68/4500. The Scepter is less expensive than the Freak system. I have not had any problems with the Scepter loosening up and needing to be twisted tight again.

Oh, and since it has come up in other threads, Smart Parts is an evil company and people should boycott them.

If you like owning different things get the lucky 15" kit. You can get them from Warped Sports.

                      SM1 Orbium

SM1 Orbium 3 piece, or the Stiffi Switch kit.
I say that but I have Freaks, and Ultralights too. Lapco.
I'm liking the Stiffi right now.
But any of them that allow you to size the barrel bore.

I say shoot a freak insert barrel... but not a freak barrel kit if you want to be different. Inserts are inserts, freak inserts can be bought used or new anywhere, and I'd be willing to bet it soots the same as the powerlyte insert. The orings in the freak kit hold inserts pretty darned snug... I doubt they move anywhere when shooting.

I shot my WWA justice barrel (accepts freak inserts) for the first time last week. It shot the budget paint really well. Plus it has like almost all solid barrel with just a 1" muzzle break for sweet efficiency. Plus, the barrel alone is only $45 new and just buy inserts as you need them.

Personally, I have a Powerlyte '07 for my Tac, and my son has one for his ION. Both kits have been flawless in the their perfomance. We could give a rat's patootee about looks. The weight is very light, and changing inserts is so much easier on the PL07. In fact, I never remove the back from my Tac except for major cleaning.

As I am unfamiliar with the Scepter, I will go on a limb...
Are backs for the Scepter kits readily available, especially used?

I bought one Freak kit long ago. I kept the fronts and inserts and each time I bought a marker with different threads I just looked around a got a used freak back with the right threads. Usually averaged around $30 for whatever back I was looking for.

IF you can easily find Scepter backs floating around online for that or less, I would say go for it. It really wouldn't matter if you have a tendency to keep the same marker.

To be honest I prefer fixed bore barrels in a larger bore size. Bore match seemed not to matter as much after I moved away from cockers.

Available enough. You want a new back? Then you call Powerlyte, or order them from their online store. Or, if you're feeling really saucy, you order the Empire Revolver back that fits your needs. They are the same barrel system / kit as the Powerlyte. Empire licensed it from PL.
