I use the standard red/white/yellow connections for mine since my tv doesn't have component or hdmi connections. I have the yellow connected to my tv, and just recently bought a couple cable extenders for the red and white connectors from Radio Shack. They were $5 apiece, totalling $10. Ask someone at Radio Shack and they'll show you where they are. Now I have the red/white extenders running from the xbox r/w cables to my surround sound system, and the yellow connector running straight into my tv. I just hooked them up to the most available input on the surround sound.

I used to have the r.w.y. cords all hooked up to a tv input, and then separate red/white connectors running from a tv output into the surround sound system, but the quality was horrible and the sound was weak. That was when I was a complete av newb.

Not sure if this helps at all, but it's how I have my 360 hooked up to my surround sound.

honestly, 360 should only be played in HD with digital surround sound.

If your receiver has the capability, try picking up a digital optical cable. The 360 A/V adapter part that plugs into the Xbox has an optical port. Mine sounds much better with optical.

Your room is must be about 5 feet wide then.

Does the standard (component) AV cable have a port (not an actual cable) for digital audio? I thought there was another required part?
God....I guess I was probably returning videotapes.

You can only get DIGITAL audio one of two ways:

                      1) Optical cable
                      2) Digital Coaxial cable

The digital coaxial has an orange connector on the back of the receiver and requires a special coax cable - a standard coax cable won't carry the necessary data.

Yes, there is an optical port on the component av cable. Running it to your reciever will allow you to decode the dolby digital signal, giving you nice discrete surround sound. Really helps with some games, like Gears of War, where you can hear the guys creeping up on you.

ohhh, i misunderstood what he was asking.

yeah, there's a port on the standard A/V xbox cable that comes with the unit. There's a little port on the grey box you plug into. optical only, though.

I think most components favor optical ahead of coax, even though in many respects the coax is a better connection. I think optical just has that "cool" factor that people like.

I just picked up the HD DVD add on yesterday, but might return it. The picture looks somewhat better on my 42" at 1080i, but not amazingly better than the same movies at 480p or upconverted. I think the biggest dividends are to be seen on larger tvs at 1080p. Mines an older set, and 1080i is the highest it will do.

I also took back a PS3 I bought. What a load of garbage, there isn't a decent game to be had except for Warhawk, and the only other games I would consider would be ratchet and clank and LittleBigPlanet. I'll just wait for them to lower the price some more, it's tanking so bad that drastic cuts are sure to come.

I've fought hard about deciding between an HD DVD or an upconverting. I think until the format war is finally finished, I won't bother.
