They only take away what you didn't earn.

You don't do this for the money, many civilians fail to understand that.

I'm not saying I agree with the military policy, but I do fully understand it, and find the up-roar is mostly about ignorance.

BTW, many ball players have lost their bonus's for contract violation.
So say instead of getting wounded and disabled you get dead. Do they make your widow repay your signing bonuses because you didn't complete the required years of service?

Not sure I see a huge difference in getting severly wounded to the point of disability and getting dead when it comes to completing contract obiligations.

I certainly agree it shouldn't be a significant factor in the decision to sign up. I just find it very strange that the government would hand out money on a good faith basis in the first place. I have no idea what/if there is combat pay anymore, but for all the other expenses involved in training, deployment and hospitialization, signing bonuses seem small. Offering up front cash to teenagers is 'entrapment'.

However, the IRS did audit my father one year, which resulted in them sending him a 54 cent check. Efficiency is not a factor. I also understand that the military is not the IRS, but their money comes from the same place.

The pay definately shouldnt be a factor when you join because it isn't really that good. I was making twice what i was working construction before i joined the army. Granted the benefits of the army are pretty good but not really that great.

And when in a combat zone the money you make is tax free, there is hazard pay and other incentives. I am hoping the pay is better in a combat zone since im leaving for iraq next week.

Not trying to knock your point, but the smart ones take the 400K life insurance. So having to potentially repay 5-10k is moot.

On the other side in respect to Army's post, I know of plenty of situations where people had to repay their boonus due to the inability of whatever reason to complete the enlistment. Now, making people repay who are injured in combat is FUBAR. No doubt about it.

So the signing bonus is added to your Monthly income? If so then when you fail to complete the term you dont get paid at all, but you don't have to pay them for the time you servied. Being that you are in this contract right now you ARMY can tell us that there would be no reason to pay back the cash already earned. Is this correct ARMY? if so I guess sometimes people doing office jobs for the goverment do make mistakes. Which I find very hard to imagine but since I also understand that people working office jobs everywhere make mistakes I can ignore this going forward without firing off nasty emails to Barbra Boxer and Gerald Ford is that correct?

Being that you are in this contract right now you ARMY can tell us that there would be no reason to pay back the cash already earned. Is this correct ARMY?Again, normal pay is not affected, only the unearned portion of the bonus if so I guess sometimes people doing office jobs for the goverment do make mistakes. Which I find very hard to imagine people in any job make mistakes, but it's very easy to imagine this about a federal employee! but since I also understand that people working office jobs everywhere make mistakes I can ignore this going forward without firing off nasty emails to Barbra Boxer and Gerald Ford is that correct? President Gerald Ford has been dead for over a year now. People think the same about Ms. Boxer too, but she does look better at it then Gerald does.

There always have been taxes on eBay items. It is your duty as a citizen to calculate the tax and pay it when filing time comes around. This is true of all online purchases. It is your duty to pay a Use Tax (title of tax may vary from state to state) on all interstate sales if you did not pay tax or payed at a lower tax rate. If it is an in-state purchase, state sales tax is applicable (and now most states tax in state items now anyway). This is not true for certain purchases, but in general it is. Funny huh? Not paying taxes on online (or other interstate sales medium) purchases constitutes tax evasion

To better answer the question: No, the feds are not taxing it yet, but it is your duty to pay a Use Tax to your state, and it has actually always has been that way.
