Truck guys. What MPG are you getting?

I am looking to purchase a truck. It will be a chevrolet, but I am having trouble deciding what size. I am debating between a 6L gas, 8L gas, and 6L diesel. It will be a 4wd and more than likely a 2500hd. I am thinking that the gas difference will not be that large. I figure ~ 11mpg with the 6gas and 9 for the other two. Does this sound similar to what you guys are getting with similar sized trucks?

The diesel will be your best option. The 8L takes way to much gas and the 5L will not have the power to do a lot of stuff like towing, hauling, etc. The diesel will also get decent millage. I think the last time I heard it was like 20 or so on highway, which isn't bad for that big of a truck.

LOL thats not a truck. Thats a car with a bed. j/k j/k. I dont want to start a my truck is bigger than yours thread.

I am purchasing a truck to use as a truck. I will continue to drive my POS wrecked 95 camery (worth 500.00 at the most) to work (3.3mi) and school (2.5mi)

I probably don't need that big of a truck, but... I know when hauling the marble flooring for my house it was 1500-2000lbs. my semi annual trip to the coal yard I drag back 6000lbs. My monthly trip to the scrap yard I usually pull 4000lbs.

The economy is not going to stay like this forever. In 3-4 years everyone will finally agree the global warming is a scam, and we will be back to 2.75 gallon of gas. It is also a GREAT time to buy trucks. Everyone is trying to get rid of them. This allows for surplus up and demand low. I can get one now for less than ever.

the computer chips also make a big difference in the diesels. i highly recommend it. my buddy has a 06 f250 manual with 8" lift and 37" tires and getting about 25 highway. He has a custom chip and exhaust (no cat or muffler, made at home for like $40) with stock gears in the diffs

I have heard alot of mixed reviews about chips. We replaced an engine last year for someone because they had a "chip". it came unplugged from vibration or something apparently. I have also heard people that swear by them. Do you know what brand he has.

he has a custom one. he wen to Wyotech and specialized in diesel performance so he knows the little secrets. wat he did was get some numbers on the truck and flashed a blank chip to his specs and installed it. i know the banks 6 gun is sweet and so is the hypertech.

yea, the great thing about diesels is that when you put a chip in them you can actually improve both power and efficiency.

My dad has an automatic F-350 TurboDiesel with an extended cab, 8ft box, and a chip that can get atleast 20mpg highway.

07 chevy 2500 crew cab with 6l diesel and allison trans is getting 23hwy and 18-20 city. The 23 was from florida to new york with a loaded bed and back seat. yes diesel is more but the gain in gas milege and power is well worth it. pay the $1.00 more a gallon to get twice the gas milege and twice the power. plus a diesel will last you forever. instead of a chip you can get a programmer like bully dog and just plug it under the dash so you dont have to change any chips or anything. it allows you to do the same things as the chip without messing with the computer.

If you are going to be hauling stuff, diesel is the ONLY way to go, and if it were me shopping for a truck, I would get the F 250 extended cab...and this is from someone that hates fords, but their diesel trucks in that size do seem to be the best out there.
