Truck guys. What MPG are you getting?

    But look at the Fords closely and be very cautious. Once they started meeting emissions (I think it was 05 or so) the mileage went into the pot.

      I thought about fords. they are always cheaper than chevys. Most of the people in my family work on chevys so it will be convent if one breaks. I am leaning towards diesel right now just for the fact that everywhere I have searched shows that they get at least 5-6-mpg more than gas.

        I've gotten so use to calling them chips that I tend to confuse people. Yes, a programer is way beftter and has less trouble to install, They also have more features/settings for what is more suited for the user.

        Don't get a Ford. Everyone I talk toabout it say that they are going down hill and it doesn't look like there is a stop either. They are constantly getting less and less power every year and they keep adding stuff to try and make it more appealing to the masses but it just gets weighed down. If you were just going by what engine it was, the Cummins in the Dodge is the best. More parts and performance pieces are out there cause they are also used in the tractors and bigger trucks. You also can't beet the $2.99 a gallon deal they have going. If it were me, it would be between the Chevy 2500HD diesel 4x4 crew cab long bed and the Dodge 2500HD diesel 4x4 mega cab long bed.

          I am iffy on the dodge. my brother has 3500, and my dad has both a 3500 & 1500 dodge. They are the dodge part of the family. I like the trucks, but I have seen them out pulled by their chevy counterparts. I will agree that cummins makes a great engine tho. It is the rest of the truck I am not big on.

              I'm a Chevy guy myself but the Dodge has some good points. Like the engine, bigger crew cab, and a solid front axle for the 4x4's. If I was in the market to buy one, I would know more.

              What type of stuff are you hauling/towing, and what is the wieght?

                  I have also considered not getting 4X4. The only thing stopping me is the fact that I drive to PA/NY once a year, and would like to be able to get around in the snow if I need to. Also when hunting I would have to have a 4X4 to get up the mountain we go to(unless I want to walk :rofl: ).

                    Also take into consideration that the suspension on the 4x4s are better for towing/hauling large loads. Most people I know that have 4x4s that only use the 4wheel drive maybe once in thier life still say its worth it. I say it's worth it cause I offroad a lot and use it all the time, but that's me.

                      While not a truck, and not close to modern, I do have a 4x4 2500 6.5l Diesel Suburban, which is roughly what you're looking at. My average mpg is around 20 to 21. It is also at about 300k miles.

                        (i also say get the diesel. i'm going to look at another VW TDI this weekend. I keep getting boned on all the ones i've found so far, hopefully this is the one.)

                          Here's a good reason not to buy chevy http://www.pistonslap.com

                          I'm not a brand loyal guy but I will tell you I sold my 03 2500HD early this year after the I started to notice some piston slap. I owned that truck for 35000 miles roughly and had to get a new tranny at 18000 miles too. I;m not saying this is typical but I was NOT impressed at all. This truck got about 10.5 mpg unloaded with it's 6l

                          My new truck later this year will be a used dodge with a 5.9l cummins. That's just my experience with trucks so far. I can tell you a half ton just isn't going to pull those big loads. I've tried

                          Also the 08 are equipted with the epa's new emissions stardarts. Your average truck is going to be a little less economical.

                            Go diesel. It's worth it. They have cleaner diesel now too so it doesn't pollute as much.

                            And with loads that you're talking about carrying, 4x4 isn't really a necessity. You'll do fine in the snow with a load in the back to keep your tires planted down.

                            BTW, I have a 95 tacoma and get ~19mpg mixed, and don't say that's not a truck because it can hold it's own

                              I dont care about the pollution. I know the facts about the environment.

                              I found the truck I want today. I am going to bid on it next week at the auction. 2002 2500HD LT duramax 4X4. its black with tan leather interior. has a bedliner, and a spare fuel tank.

                              one thing that I was wondering on was the external fuel tank. there is a controller inside that says "Trax UFS" Transfer flow aux universal fuel system. It had an led screen with 4-5 different number outputs on it. It said "OK" on the system in green so I guess it works. I am going to google it, but if anyone has any input on them it would be appriciated.

                                My dads 91 2500 had an external fuel tank and it worked great. If we were ever on a long trip and didn't want to stop for more fuel, just flip the switch and it pumps into the stock tank. No stop, no hassle. It also worked as a tool/parts carrier.
