    Mossberg Shotguns?

I'm looking to pick up a shotgun for home defense and checked out what a local pawn shop had in stock today. The lady had a Mossberg 500 ($245) and a 535 ($300)for sale.

Any advice on what to look for on a Mossberg shotgun? Anyone have any preferences of either the 500 or 535? Good things about them, bad things about them, what worn parts to look for in a used one???

The only plusses I see for the 535 over the 500 is that it is newer, less beat up, and will take the magnum shells whereas the 500 will not. I doubt I'd ever want/need to shoot magnums so that isn't too important. The plusses for the 500 is that it seems to have a bigger aftermarket following which is nice, and it's a bit cheaper too.

Basically I'm wanting to get a pistol grip and a matching fore-grip (non-pistol grip) such as THIS ONE to slap on it and that'll be about the extent of my modifications to it. If I do get the 500 and feel like making it pretty I might get some satin black powdercoating and give it a coat.

the 535 has an overbored barrel, so you cant use slugs. you can use 3" magnum shells in a 500, just not 3.5" ones. if your local walmart sells guns, you can get a new one for that price there. try a pistol prip before you buy one. i found that i hated them, its impossible to aim.

Unfortunately our local Wal-mart just remodeled and lost their guns in the process. I'll check out a few other places to see if I can get a better deal on a used one or get a brand new one for close to the same price.

I'm guessing that yours is a 535? I'm loving the extended magazine tube! In fact your gun is pretty much exactly what I would prefer, that way I could swap the synthetic stock and pistol grip back and forth and not have to mess with changing out the foregrip. That way I'd have an awesome home defense point and shoot weapon as well as a functional hunting gun.

Man you guys were right about them being the same price new... in fact check THIS out.

If I'm reading the description properly (kinda a crappy one), then this is the Mossberg 500 with synthetic stock, PLUS a pistol grip all for under 300. Throw in 20 bucks shipping, and I'm sure who ever I get to recieve the order for me will charge another 25 bucks or so for the paperwork and such and I'll have a brand new gun to my door for around $350.

I think I'll go this route!

590 ftw. You can never have too many rounds in your shotgun.

I'd love to get a 590, but unfortunately the price jump between the 8 round 500 and the 9 round 590 is just not worth it IMHO. I suppose if an intruder hasn't left my house by the time I fire off the 8th shell then I've got a hell of a situation! LOL

I do like the looks of the ghost ring sights on the 590 though.... Maybe I'll have to add some to my 500 when I get it.

I love how A.O. has turned into a gun forum... 5 of the first 25 threads are about guns!

                            IMO
                            Remington 870 > any Mossberg
                            But to each his own.

I wouldn't use a pump gun for Home Def though I have my Rem. 1100 rigged with a light and ambidexterous extended bolt pin (it has a larger surface to make it easier to clear the breach with the left hand from the firing position.) it points well and i can put more rounds consistently on target in a shorter period of time. not to mention blind-firing or line of sight shooting is easier when you dont have to jack the forearm after each shot and I can shoot it off handed, one handed or from the hip.
