I'm looking to pick up a shotgun for home defense and checked out what a local pawn shop had in stock today. The lady had a Mossberg 500 ($245) and a 535 ($300)for sale.
Any advice on what to look for on a Mossberg shotgun? Anyone have any preferences of either the 500 or 535? Good things about them, bad things about them, what worn parts to look for in a used one???
The only plusses I see for the 535 over the 500 is that it is newer, less beat up, and will take the magnum shells whereas the 500 will not. I doubt I'd ever want/need to shoot magnums so that isn't too important. The plusses for the 500 is that it seems to have a bigger aftermarket following which is nice, and it's a bit cheaper too.
Basically I'm wanting to get a pistol grip and a matching fore-grip (non-pistol grip) such as THIS ONE to slap on it and that'll be about the extent of my modifications to it. If I do get the 500 and feel like making it pretty I might get some satin black powdercoating and give it a coat.

I'll check out a few other places to see if I can get a better deal on a used one or get a brand new one for close to the same price.

not complaining though, I had the pleasure of participating in a full auto shoot last year at dday. Got to shoot just about everything I had ever dreamed of. AND got to personally blow up a car
