If we have no idea what they'd be like, talk like, look like or what their technology would be like, I think it's a bit presumptuous to assume that we could know what motivates them. As for being able to detect an object near the earth, the US has stealth jets so why is it hard to believe that aliens that have craft that can travel long distances at high rates of speeds would not have a similar tech to go un noticed?

my only point is that if they are an intelligent space fairing life form,
no matter what shape, size, colour or composition they are they will have to work in the physical universe, in that universe you have to function with in the laws of physics.
granted that to travel the distances we are speaking of here the Aliens will need a greater understanding of the physical laws of the universe and applied them to their technology.

this does not refute the point that the artificial transmissions coming from the Earth make it

being intelligent they will capture and decode the transmissions.
decipher the content, discover we are a waring planet.

WHY WOULD THEY COME HERE?

But that's assuming that their logic works the same way yours does. I'm sure other people do things you would never do and vice versa; with that much variation between species, I don't think we have a chance of predicting what aliens would think like, what would draw them to a certain location, et cetera. For all we know, they could be coming here just to watch the terrible stuff we do to each other. Could be alien sport; there's no way of knowing.

Regardless, though, I think the fact that we're broadcasting so many radio waves and the like into space would probably be at least worth a look to anyone else out there. That's like standing alone on a beach thinking you're the only one there when someone else shouts at you - doesn't matter if you're a human, mouse, elephant, whatever, you'll probably look to see what made the noise.

I have a passing interest in this subject, so I will throw a coupla things into the pot.

People keep talking about the fact that we have been broadcasting radio waves into space for about 100 years or so. And SETI, is looking for broadcasts from outerspace, as an indicator of intelligent life. Just because we have discovered Radio does not mean that anybody, or anything else has done the same. What makes us think that the transmissions that we send out is even being looked for, or even known by any other potential race of beings? Radio is great for short ranges, relativly speaking, but we are talking interstellar distances here. Very inefficient way of communicating.

Also, here on earth, all life is based on Carbon. We think that we understand that concept as it applies on Earth. But, why cant a potential alien life form be based on an completly different element? Say, silicone, or Iron? If that is the case, then would we even recognize an alien life form if we saw it? Would the term "biological" even apply? How about the concept of "time"? And, just so everybody understands it, the concept of time is a purly human invention. Time may have no meaning to any other life form that may exist out there.

that's true, but those are all hypothetical. sure, life MIGHT be able to survive without water and not be carbon based, but we dont know that for sure. we do know what life here needs, so it would be smarter to look for those conditions elsewhere, instead of looking for hypothetical conditions not knowing if they even work. start with what you know and refine as you discover new evidence.
