    Russian Boar and a 375 :)

Yeh, so I decided I had to "test" the 375 Holland and Holland. I loaded up a batch of 300 grain Hornady Spire tip bullets on top of 65 grains of IMR4064 powder. Think a 300 grain bullet in the neighborhood of 2500FPS.

Now, I am not going to get into the debate if hunting on a sanctuary is really hunting. Is anything that you are gaurenteed a shot really hunting? Regardless the point was really to test the rifle.

When the owner asked me what I was using and I told him his only comment was "thats bigger than a 300 magnum isn't it?" I just grinned. Since I was using a TC Pro Hunter single shot rifle I took along the Glock 20 10MM loaded with 200 grain Hornady TAP ammo. The guide elected to not carry a weapon.

It was a couple hour hunt, having passed a couple smallish pigs on the stalk out to the blind and a nursing sow that came into the shooting lanes from the blind.

We finally chose one pig walking in. A mature boar with the classic "razorback" of fur along its haunches. Later it would dress out at 245 lbs, which is a good eating size if a touch on the heavy side for it.

Because of the thick brush the shot was only about 20 yards and it was coming straight towards us. When I was asked if I could get a head shot from there I grinned.

The shot was a bit off to the right from being centered - I had noticed on the stalk the scope mounts had actually worked a touch loose on my last range session likely from recoil. Regardless this boar had scented us and had started to angle just off towards the heavy brush and I made a quick shot on it.

Apparently the 375 is enough for boar. The thing didn't take a single step and the guide says it hit the ground instantly. I was bit concerned about the twitching until I noticed the fairly heavy blood coming from its head had lots of pink brain matter in it.

Yeh, I think the rifle will do.

Those wild boars are some tough little bastards. When I shot mine, I hit him broadside with a 30.06 just above the front left shoulder. He ran for about 150 yards through the brush. When I finally found him, by tracking the small pieces of flesh and blood, he had a hole in him big enough for me to put my fist into without touching the sides. I couldn't believe he ran as far as he did. Crazy.

I met a guy that had killed one of his high $ hunting dogs by hitting a cornered boar in the shoulder. The shot bounced out and hit the dog. The boar had already killed another dog. Shoulder shots on any game is asking a lot of a bullet.

My brother in law shot an elk in the shoulder with a 270 Weatherby and a heavy game bullet at short range. It just made a big shallow hole that the elk had to think about. While it was thinking, he made a much better hole.

You know, I've cleaned enough animals that most of it doesn't bother me, but brains still hold a particular grossness for me.

Thats' impressive. It's not uncommon to put 2-3 arrows THROUGH a boar's vitals and still be following it.
Hunting's fun when the animals hunt back.

Good to hear the .375 can take a boar
Next time line 'em up and see how many it can drop with one shot.

I have yet to understand why human beings kill defenseless beings for the fun of it.
                            We are pretty sick, huh.
