Yeh, so I decided I had to "test" the 375 Holland and Holland. I loaded up a batch of 300 grain Hornady Spire tip bullets on top of 65 grains of IMR4064 powder. Think a 300 grain bullet in the neighborhood of 2500FPS.
Now, I am not going to get into the debate if hunting on a sanctuary is really hunting. Is anything that you are gaurenteed a shot really hunting? Regardless the point was really to test the rifle.
When the owner asked me what I was using and I told him his only comment was "thats bigger than a 300 magnum isn't it?" I just grinned. Since I was using a TC Pro Hunter single shot rifle I took along the Glock 20 10MM loaded with 200 grain Hornady TAP ammo. The guide elected to not carry a weapon.
It was a couple hour hunt, having passed a couple smallish pigs on the stalk out to the blind and a nursing sow that came into the shooting lanes from the blind.
We finally chose one pig walking in. A mature boar with the classic "razorback" of fur along its haunches. Later it would dress out at 245 lbs, which is a good eating size if a touch on the heavy side for it.
Because of the thick brush the shot was only about 20 yards and it was coming straight towards us. When I was asked if I could get a head shot from there I grinned.
The shot was a bit off to the right from being centered - I had noticed on the stalk the scope mounts had actually worked a touch loose on my last range session likely from recoil. Regardless this boar had scented us and had started to angle just off towards the heavy brush and I made a quick shot on it.
Apparently the 375 is enough for boar. The thing didn't take a single step and the guide says it hit the ground instantly. I was bit concerned about the twitching until I noticed the fairly heavy blood coming from its head had lots of pink brain matter in it.
Yeh, I think the rifle will do.
