So Im gonna do it... 50BMG

Yup. I am going to make my own 50bmg rifle from the ground up. Single shot bolt action.

I have the action pretty much figured out, and will be taking several cues from our beloved automags.

I want a cock-on-close bolt... just because its easy to make and I like my enfields. Its going to have a very custom 3 lug bolt design. I am well aware of the 65k+psi max chamber pressure and have designed the lugs/receiver accordingly.

    thoughts, suggestions...

should I tac it out, or go bench rest style?

Its gonna have a wood stock just because my dad is an excellent wood worker and I would sure appreciate having something he made on it. So that has me leaning toward the high polish stainless/wood look.

I fully intend on having a massive aluminum bed in it, free floated barrel. I think im looking in the 28-30 pound range. The barrel is a 36" lothar walther 50bmg target barrel. 1.65" OD diameter 8 groove/lands 1:15 RH twist. I have one of their heavy profile barrels on my AR and cant complain so why not... besides... its already chambered so hopefully I can skip buying reamers.

Been working with the parent company of a very large paintball company (I wont say who unless he says its okay) for the past few months thru work, because of their excellent machine shop, and will more than likely have them do a lot of the machine work.

I dont even want to think about the optics right now... the scope alone will probably cost more than the entire build. And ammo you ask... well thats why I am doing it... I have quite a bit already just begging me to shoot it.

    So WOO HOO!
    50BMG here I come!

I always figured any 50 that you could carry was 'tac".

Those mongo 50 bench stocks are definitely for full range use only.

That's not just a barrett. That is a bullpup barrett. I am 3/4 paid off on a Steyr HS .50.

I want a "field" use one. Something I can readily carry and hunt with. Why? for Petes sake, I hunt whitetail with a 375H+H do I really need a why? The look on the guides face when I loaded the 375 for hog was great, I would love a 50.

338 lapua is def a possibilty.

lohman, define your idea of "field" if you would.

I have already had a few offers to make some x% guns... lmk if you would be interested.
im looking at ~$1k production cost right now.

Something reasonably carriable (and firable from the shoulder, which may be the issue when dealing with those pressures and bullet weights). 10lbs, no longer than a long barreled magnum :)

                        haha. sorry.

The barrel by itself is almost 20 pounds. Dont know what the final weight is going to be... buts its going to be considerable.

I know.. that kind of pressure behind that kind of bullet weight would not be shootable at those gun weights anyways I assume.

                            Wow...
So this is taking some time.
this thing is turning out to be HUGE.

It is basically a scaled up benchrest rifle for 50bmg... and yeah... those little 6mm jobs are seriously beefy, because this 50 is turning into a feakin monster.

BTW... I think I have my scope.

Anyway... Being that I have a basic action geometry and all the pressures, yield strengths, and all that other fun stuff figured out... I was thinking... it would be fun to have a bolt action in some hand gun caliber. say 9mm 10mm or 45acp... maybe 357 mag or 45 colt. basically I have been hearing stories of a guy with his 357mag lever gun loaded up with a few grains of trailboss and it sounds like a paintball gun.. cause the barrel is so long it eats up most of the sound. yeah its going something stupid like 700-800 fps but so what... its still a 180 grain chunk of lead thats gonna make a hole in something. So I got to thinking. bolt action, with one of those nifty little handgun guys sealed up real tight. with a suppresor on the end. I bet it would sound like a loud sneeze.

                            Thoughts?

Do it in 10MM or 41 Magnum and you would have something a bit more interesting. Seems how you are building an oddity anyways.
