If it has ANY positive effect on post release behavior, they can throw the inmates birthday parties too.

So hire people to do birthday parties. Hell, hire the entire staff of Chuckie Cheese to come in and let them play a game of skeeball for every day that they don't beat/rape/murder their fellow inmates... Regardless of the efficacy of such treatment (or the stupidity of tax-payers money being spent of Dominos orders and movie outings for felons) it's silly to expect the guards to be the ones doing it. But they're the only option because there just isn't enough money to pay for therapists, psychologists, guards, and summercamp councilors for screwups.

Corrections officers are there (as I'm sure Druid knows) to enforce the rules and maintain discipline. If you start getting all happy-crappy with some pedophile or some murder and splitting a pizza once a week, how much more pissed is he gonna be when you pull a cigar tube of heroin out of his bunghole or find his sharpened cafeteria tray shard and have to send him to the hole? Better to be "the man" doing what "the man" does than be a "friend" who just "screwed you over".

Anyway, I'm guessing that this is the brain(less)child of some group of rapist-hugging liberals who think that all of lifes problems can be solved by a chat over coffee but know absolutely nothing about the criminal justice system, right? They've never met a murderer or cooker or pedophile so they think they're all "tortured souls" who need a hug and a pat on the back to become functional parts of society... In my experience that's usually how this crap starts.

Make em learn a trade make em use it for their sentence. Screw making license plates, fill potholes, shovel asphalt, fix sidewalks, clean the ghettos, work at farms, clean gutters, lay more railroad lines, etc.
