Well thank you very much ... I only try to help as best as I can.
Have fun with the reading and good luck with the C++ programming.

The golden rule to command line work on Unix ...

Never ever work as root ... always work as a regular user and su to root only when needed ...

Helps protect you from little type mistakes such as the following ...

        rm -rf /

not a good command to type as root *LOL*

to answer your question from a few posts back, yes, you have to type your source code into a text file and then compile the text file with g++.
get aquainted with one of your text editors in linux, you have a few to choose from. theres vi, ae, emacs and pico. vi is the hardest to learn but programmers like it. pico is easy and the one i use cuz im lame. actually pico is fine. i write html, c, c++ source code and shell scripts in pico and it works fine.

Time for a flame war ...

            VIM rules!!! *LOL* ...

Pico is easy, but your best to learn vi. Its the only editior that you will find on any type of unix. Solaris, VMS, HP-UX, AIX, BSD, ...

oh, i agree 100%. i just got into the habit of using pico cuz its quick and dirty. i dont spend a lot of time working in unix/linux(something im working on changing). actually some of the dialogs here have encouraged me to pick up the pace on freeing myself from the redmond juggernaut.
heres my fortune from my shell account at last login, i thought this was neat.

              JACK AND THE BEANSTACK
              by Mark Isaak

Long ago, in a finite state far away, there lived a JOVIAL character named Jack. Jack and his relations were poor. Often their hash table was bare. One day Jack's parent said to him, "Our matrices are sparse. You must go to the market to exchange our RAM for some BASICs." She compiled a linked list of items to retrieve and passed it
to him. So Jack set out. But as he was walking along a Hamilton path, he met the traveling salesman.
"Whither dost thy flow chart take thou?" prompted the salesman in high-level language.
"I'm going to the market to exchange this RAM for some chips
              and Apples," commented Jack.
"I have a much better algorithm. You needn't join a queue
there; I will swap your RAM for these magic kernels now."
Jack made the trade, then backtracked to his house. But when he told his busy-waiting parent of the deal, she became so angry she started thrashing.
"Don't you even have any artificial intelligence? All these
kernels together hardly make up one byte," and she popped them out the window ...
