Building a Fish Pond (swimming pool...)

Something else that has been taking up my time lately... I've been building a pond

The pond is still very new. I've only just had the filter going long enough to put some fish in it.

Here are some pics from the construction, now that it has water and lights in I'll take some more, but the construction is not yet 100% finished even. I still have to finish the seated edge and hide the filter etc behind a rock wall complete with waterfall etc

It's located at the bottom of my garden, to give it some scale it's in front of a double garage. The black thing in the corner is the filter and where the waterfall and rock wall will be located.

I didn't do it the easy way... where the pond is now used to be a raised rockery! So I had to remove soil before being able to dig below surface level! The raised edge is made from sleepers and is a perfect height to sit on and relax with a drink or twenty. The water comes right to the top so you sit down right next to it to feed the fish etc.

Here's a friend helping me to 'carpet' it before we put the liner in. The carpet helps to protect the liner and stop roots and sharp stones etc. causing problems. My friend helps give some scale to the pond. It's 8m from tip of the diamond to the other tip and 4m wide. Approx 1m deep in the middle with a 50cm shelf around the edge. There is a shallow zone at the nearest end.

    In goes the liner!

And then the first water... it's actually big enough and deep enough to swim in I have no doubt some friends will prove that point at the next house party I hold...

I've just put some fish into it, Koi, Golden Orfe, Goldfish, Grucian (sp?) Carp, and Sturgeon. I'm also just working on an underwater lighting system (looks stunning at night!)

More pics will follow as it develops

Nice. How much is it going to cost you when it's done?

No they aren't. Carp come in small sizes also! It depends on what type and how old they are. At the moment the pond is majorly understocked and that's with about 60 fish in it!

The Grucian (sp?) carp only get to about 4" and koi can get big but it takes a long time and even then the pond is big enough for them.

It will have cost me far too much when it's done but I will enjoy it a lot.

What a great project! I would love to build one at my place but with the winters in New England I would have to heat it or it would freeze completely solid even with the filter trying to keep the water moving.

I can't wait to see more pictures!

Yeah, there are certainly some weather differences between the Northern US and England... I was in London over New Years a few years back and when people found out we were there on vacation, they were appologizing for the "horrible" weather (not that they could do anything about it, they were just REEEEEAAAAALLLLLLY polite). It was about 30*F with a little freezing rain. Nothing major, especially when it was 10* back home with 4' of snow on the ground!

            Nice looking job so far!

I still think a 30cc Enforcer would make a nice addition to the pond. Throw on a tuned pipe, and your good to go.

It is big enough to swim in... God help the fish during my next house party...

I'm not sure exactly how long it has taken so far, but quite a while. I was working on it in the evenings and when I found time at the weekends. It was a project that took a little time here and there over a few months.

more pics soon as I get the seating edge underway.
