Sorry bro, but I disagree with you...and I'll tell ya why. I've played a bunch of RPG's in my time. D&D, Rifts, Palladium's D&D Version, Marvel, Batman, Robotech, DC, etc. I like Rifts better than all of them because you have so many options. The biggest problem I find with it is you almost have too many options...and every time a new book comes out your players always want to jump ship and make new characters for it. But, that all aside, it offers a wider variety than just about anything else. As for power gaming, it's all about perspective. Yeah, if you're used to playing a third level elf with a short sword and chainmail you're going to look at a game with railguns and dragon character classes as too much.

However, if you set your campaign with even creatures that match the level of power you're players have, then they become just like that elf with the short sword again. They may be bad, but they're always someone badder. For example, I play in a group of five players who range in between 9th-11th level Rifts characters....all of the tougher classes too. My Temporal Wizard is 11th level and carrying a nasty rune weapon as well as a mean staff. Does this mean we roll up and slap everything? No. We encounter stuff we beat down..of course..but we focus on fighting truly mean things. Like the Splugorth (oh about 15-20,000 HP) or the Four Horsemen, Godlings, etc. It makes for a very interesting game, even if we aren't scraping to get by. Everyone likes different things.

Oh, vf-xx, Robotech (Macross especially) is the bomb! I remember watching the series in sindication in '86! I have the DVD's of it too. Best anime ever!

I have around 30 AD&D books in PDF format at home on my computer

A lot of them are Planescape accessories, though (My favorite setting to GM for).

I'll post a list when I get home.

I use to play AD&D alot but not since the new edition came out. My Favorite character was my level 14 or 15 hafling theif. He ahd like a 94% pick pocket. Man he was funny to role play.

If you think Rifts is flexible, go play some GURPS.

D&D's OK, well 3rd Ed is nice, but 2nd Ed sucked, the second worst system I've ever seen, only the Babylon 5 RPG was worse.

Now for a killer system, Sillouette, from Dream Pod 9, the core system for all their games, players need a total of 5 d6's for the most powerfl characters, character creation is simple, and it actively discourages twinks and min-maxers. White Wolf's Storyteller system is good, but very easy to min-max, especially in Werewolf (Hmm, Lupine, Arhoun, Stargazer, max your Rage, Gnosis and Willpower in one go.)

TSR's best system is still Alternity, which is what the D20 system is based off of, it beta tested the system, and the original is still better than current D20.

I grew up playing a huge variety of RPG's. Mostly D&D and then Rifts.

Slowly, the guys I played with began making changes to the system. Now there is no remnant of what once was Rifts and now only a 16 page manual tentatively titled "Realms".

It is essentially a combination of what I thought the best ideas in table top were. The system is tweaked to allow for maximum flexibility without having to make system changes.

It will never sell because it requires players and "Realm Keepers" to be creative. All the sample groups I've tried it with (you know, the dork squads at the hobby shops) have all said the same thing. I'll paraphrase:

"The system is awesome, but you need more cool things"

Thusly proving my theory that the role playing community at large would rather hop in a Glitter Boy and shoot Juicers than be burdened with the responsibility of creating there own characters and worlds.

Oh well, more power to me.

Well, I must say that I like both 3rd ed. D&D, as well as Rifts. For my characters:

Rifts: 6th level NGR Intelligence Commando with a Dragonwing

                            3rd ed> D&D: 4th level thief/3rd level fighter with 73 hp

a side note on my D&D character. He's got so many hp because he recieved a Manual of Bodily Health (he now sports a 20 Constitution). His AR (when hasted) is 28, as well.

There are three kinds of people in the world: Those who can count, and those who can't.

                            With understanding comes understanding.

If the saying is true that we are what we eat, aren't we all just cannibals?

i played rifts my first time yesterday. took 3 hours to roll up my character and then i had to play. i juggled this between a double shift of work and an angry parent. anyways. i have a lvl 0 werepanter. (i can shift from human to panther, i forget my exact species name) i have this INSANE regeneration this that the dm just has fun with. so far ive had my upper body half separated from the lower half, and ive been quartered (which i was a little mad for because it destroyed my power armor)
