i work as an art director for one of the 5 largest business software development companies. my current assignment is maintaining and redesigning all client facing web applications/sites (over 30, including the brand home sites, last time i checked) for one of the big three auto companies.
i also do a good deal of freelance web design and app development (gotta love not having a non-compete clause in your contract

depends how you define "fine art"
if it is simply based on the medium, then no, i suppose not. if your definition is more based on the ability of a piece to come alive and convey emotion and purpose, then yeah, i'd say its fine art.
in my mind, there is little difference between well done advertising and 'museum quality' art at many base levels.
every now and then the engineers back off and let me just make something pretty that will still serve its purpose and help move product

While I have ALOT of respect for what you do, I wouldn't really consider it fine art. Advertising, while it may be difficult, and even beautiful, isn't an expression of yourself...the content is dictated by your employer. Even if they give you complete creative control, they will still make you include certain elements that are not your own. I suppose that a "fine art" commision could also be viewed in the same way though.Comment

i agree completely, if i paint a landscape, its fine art. but the moment that you are told the painting was done soley for use as a design on t-shirts it becomes tainted, devalued, by many. i strongly disagree with that, the skill and effort that go into a piece (in my mind) are what truely develop its value.Originally posted by Kai

the first person that can convince me that someone who hides in the duct work of a gallery calls it performance art is more of an "artist" that someone who applies fine art techniques to a commercial, digital medium gets a free cookie. so far 3 philosophy of art professors haven't been able to come up with a decent explanation

I work in the Exhibitions Department of The Museum of Modern Art. One of my main duties is to commission artists to do installations. I think we are more conservative that most places, but we NEVER tell an artist what to do or change in their work. That is the main difference between commercial and fine art.

The problem with "fine art" in my humble opinion - is you basically have to live like a begger for the slim slim slim chance that you get modern recognition and are able to sell enough paintings to make a decent living.
Many others who are "fine artists" eventually find a niche where they have a certain look and style and can aquire a following and do art shows and sell prints to make a good living.
Others go the illustrative route and do works on commission for everything from magazines to murals.
This goes for everything from drawing to painting to sculpture. To live a true bohemian life style and create only for love and art is a rather difficult and I argue dated life style for the modern artist. I dont know how the turn of the centry painters managaged to scrounge money to guy their paints and still have enought to warm thier bodies with vodka at night.
For me - I dualed majored in Graphic Design and Oil Painting. Currenly I am an Art Director and Lead Web Designer for a small company in Kansas City. Not quite as fun as oil painting all day - but I still get the creative challenge - as well as working with how to best organize and present information.
The most noble of occupations? Probably not - but I have student loans and debt that I have to pay off. Right now I am consumed with web design - but I am sure when things settle in a few years the oil painting muse will allow me a visit from time to time.

I am a little bit of everything. I have a degree in Illustration and over the three years I've been out of school my work has morphed into more studio art than illustration per se. I work during the day as a graphic designer and have done a bit of web design now and then. I'm currently in the middle of figuring out whether I'm going to stay here in KC and stay professional or go to grad school and get my master's in fine art. We shall see.Comment

dre I really recomend grad school, but to go into debt. The best thing is to find one that will pay you to go there. That is what I did. It's like a two year vacation to just make art.
